It was Gelett Burgess. Although they were published in 1895, they're still in copyright. But you're right. We'd probably get away with quoting them as you seem to be able to quote up to 4 lines without any problems.

Not quite synonyms, but other colours in the purple range:
mauve, lilac, violet, crimson, maroon, lavender.

Sorry, I missed it when looking, but then I scanned for 'book'.
I watched the film in a cinema in London in 1986. It must have been shortly after it was released. I was in England with a group from uni.
