h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Hi there, fellow researchers and froods.

As much as I appreciate the Powers for giving us a home for many years, I also can't help but being a little excited about what might happen next. Perhaps we get some features back that we have missed, perhaps we can get new features (Aviators, anyone?).

The only thing I have constantly felt bad about is my contributions. I've only one solo entry. One entry where I think I contributed one sentence (appreciate the entry though!).

I was just thinking. I work with requirement management and test for software. Perhaps I should have a play with writing a User Requirement Specification for Hootoo? Answers on a postcard please. There are many wonderful things here, and the editors have been really good at including the community, but I'm a documentation nerd, and really like to read for myself. How about a page for input, and an entry for the URS? Would this be useful for the future buyers you think?

Like I said elsewhere, I don't really know what or how I can contribute - I'm fairly clueless about all that stuff - but I'm very happy that some extremely capable people _are_ contributing.

I only wish I knew what you were talking about. But, as I don't, that's usually a sign that you have specialist knowledge in a field so I'm going to hazard a yes.

The Google group has many people joining up and I know there is a conversation on there specifically for people to donate skills. I bet yours would be a bood one.

Is 'bood' a combination between 'bad' and 'good'?

But seriously - there are a lot of capable people, both on various threads here (I'm pretty sure Amy Paperlady could supply all the necessary links, since she seems to be keeping her finger on the pulse, so to speak [or am I just literally translating a Hebrew idiom, here? ]) and on the Google group. I don't really know much about computers, other than finding my way about my own stuff, haven't written an EG entry for ages, and have hardly participated in any community stuff. So for the time being, I'm just a spectator.

Its not though, just about people who can code/do techy things, we need as many as possible onboard, and joined to the group (but feel free to skip reading the more techy geeky convos about stuff), for the new site to work we need researchers, writers.... not just coders and ubber-geeks I'm mainly doing some web-searching to find referneces in the media/blogosphere to the BBC news/site disposal, and making sandwichs for everyone and cups of tea and then later on I can argue for editorioal priveledge for the nighthoover account

Writing requirements is simply writing what we, the users, want.

Okay, I have no idea what has already been discussed on the many threads about this, but as far as I'm concerned, (a) We need to keep the smileys! Pretty much the best smileys on the 'net, seriously. (b) I mentioned that on my journal some time ago, but I feel that there has to be a way to keep (and hopefully transfer) the conversation threads, since so much of the community happens on them (more than on A-pages or U-pages, I'd say). I know I have a lot of stuff I'd really hate to lose.
I'm not sure if that's the kind of thing you were looking for, but hey, I already said I'm not very good at this...

I would expect the old conversations to be part of the move, like when BBC acquired the site in the olden days.

I really hope you're right - I just have no idea how these things work.
I tried seeing what's been said about this, but haven't seen anything so far, and can't really bother to go through all the discussions... so I hope that it's not mentioned simply because it's a given that all convo threads move with the site.

van, I wouldn't say that it's getting axed, if you mean that it will be shut down.

I sincerely hope that someone will host the site, and give some some support staff as well, and we have lots of community action going on.

Let's hope, and work for a good solution.
