hello, rooftiler!
if you haven't used a sequencer before, i would greatly recommend 'cakewalk audio pro'. it's probably the most user-friendly program i've ever used - not to mention the requirements are terribly low, and it should run on any computer that has a pentium processor (it doesn't matter which ). our band conductor uses 'encore', which is available in most shops as well, but cakewalk was my first program, and i'm more than a little attached to it. what i like about it is that it not only offers sixteen-channel multitrack (i'm sure you can add more, but i've never written up to sixteen parts before!), but also custom-made settings for conventional ensembles like jazz kit, brass quintet, string quartet etc - comes with all the instruments and modulations pre-set so that you don't even have to key it in yourself.
cheers!

rooftiler - back again, for another bit at least Posted Jun 2, 2003
Sounds cool! Is it the sort of thing you can get on magazine coverdisks or do I have to go & fork out some real dosh for it? (I don't really object to paying for things, it's just I'm a bit skint at the moment).
Thanks for the info & encouragement. I look forward to spending more time here on the MuG page!

well... that's the tough bit, isn't it? i think you have to actually fork out some money. BUT! i also hear that you can download finale for free. it may not be the complete professional edition, and you may not get some of the nifty things that usually comes with it, but at least you'll be able to do rudimentary sequencing. practice for a bit before you decide what software to get
i would recommend that you visit: http://music.wcu.edu/retreat/links.html
(you know, you can also use all this sequencing software to record live performances and mix them...)
