If I had to pick just one, I'd say my favourite composer was Mozart. But there are so many other composers I really like too - just on the Bs, there'd be Bartok, Beethoven, Brahms, Britten...

although i have only herd the first movment....

i dont really have a favorate composer though....

Got to say my favourite composer is Beethoven, and his Symphony No.9.

I like Wagner's "Ring Cycle", Vivaldi various concertos including the "Four Seasons". Albinoni, Handel, Haydn, Purcell, Stravinsky (esp. his "Rite of Spring"), Boulez, JS Bach, Berg, Debussy, and loads of others. It depends on my mood, really.

yes classical music theres a composision for all moods...

Gubernatrix, the Vivaldi cantata recording you mention sounds interesting! Is it by any chance on a CD with his Stabat Mater? I've just been checking Amazon, and I'm tempted...

Hmmm. Favourite Composers? A difficult one as I like loads and loads of them, though the ubiquitousness (is that a word?) of Mozart gets up my nose a bit.

It helps actually playing that sort of stuff (I play in amateur orchestras), as I get a chance to hear the music before I buy it. My CD Collection is basically a long, shiny plastic rundown of the concerts I've done over the years, so I've got stuff like 'The Rite of Spring' and 'Firebird' alongside Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons' (I haven't played those - it was just the First CD I ever got, because my Mum and Dad got it for me for Christmas when I also got my first ever CD Player - they didn't know what else to get!).

For Symphonies, I tend to head very much to the late, late, late romantic. Particular Favourites (more or less in order of preference - but, again, depending on mood) are:

Mahler, Symphony No 2. ('Resurrection')
Shostakovich, Symphony No. 5
Mahler, Symphony No. 6 ('Tragic')
Mahler, Symphony No. 1 ('Titan')
Rachmaninov, Symphony No. 2
Elgar, Symphony No. 1

I also enjoy all four Brahms Symphonies - and I get to play them fairly regularly. Sibelius wrote some corkers as well.

I've tried a Bruckner Symphony, but that was so long I'm amazed I didn't have pressure sores on my rear by the end of it.

I'm also rather partial to more modern British music - stuff by Vaughan-Williams, Delius and Britten, though I do have works by Tallis, Byrd and Gibbons at the other end of the Chronology.

Contemporary music classes at college introduced me to the work of Arvo Part, as well.

Recently rediscovered Rutter's Requiem after performing it - and found the sparkling 'Toccata in 7' on the same disc.

That's the best thing about buying a CD for one track - I sometimes get something else on it that I end up preferring. I found one CD with Walton's Music for the film 'Henry V' on it - but discovered that I liked his 'Belshazzar's Feast' (on the same disc) even more.

However, as a viola player, I am severely and violently allergic to Viennese music. Could someone go back in time and dispatch the entire Strauss Family to the moon, please?

hello anthea! i like mozart a great deal too (in fact, he's my favourite). i got to hear the leipzig gewendhaus orchestra play his 'jupiter' symphony (no.41) last week, and it was fabulous hearing it live! they were also playing richard strauss - who is another favourite of mine (have you listened to his stuff before? they're wonderful imho) - and the reason they didn't have speakers and mikes in the concert hall that night became apparent the moment they started playing...

other than that, i'm also a very big fan of russian classical music written by severely depressed russians and contemporary compositions. i love playing schumann on the piano, although i have yet to work up enough courage to play 'in der nacht' when i'm alone after the sun goes down...

do you play any instruments, or are you just a fan of classical music?

oh, and megapuppy - i absolutely *hate* the strauss family as well! how my mum can listen to an entire strauss waltz cd is quite, quite beyond me...

The Strauss Family are awful, I agree.

I'm currently working my way through all the Mozart symphonies! Although I much prefer his operas.

Sibelius is good - first introduced to his work via "The Sky At Night" because his Pelleas et Mélisande ("At the Castle Gate", I think the piece is called) is used as the theme music.

Quite keen on Ligeti as well (his music was used in films like 2001 and 2010).
