Where is Wales?
Colin Started conversation Nov 22, 2002
Looking at the venues for meets and some seem to be a bit far to travel. Anyone in South Wales fancy a meet? I'm sure we could work something out. After all we are a rather sociable lot and we have some fine places to show off. Lets see some response and see if we can have a good time with lots of HWYL ! !

Hi Colin. I quite agree with you, especially as I don't have much free time to get to distant venues. Whereabouts in Wales are you?
I'm in Llanelli, and I know (though I haven't met), a couple of other Welsh researchers. I don't know how many of us there are (this is a big site), so give it a few days and see if anyone else bites.

Well I live about an hour from the Severn Bridge, albeit on the English side - and I am always up for a good meet.

Well I am impressed with the response that has come in since I posted my message! I'm pretty good at making suggestions, but not any good at organising anything. Would some kind soul like to take on the task as I wouldn't have a clue what to do or how to do it! Where to start or meet? Anyone got any Ideas? Maybe we could make it a team effort. I live in Bridgend which is about an hour drive West of the bridge (HEAVEN). It's about 45 minutes from Llanelli.

Not an idea, but just to express an interest. I live in Newport, almost at the end of the second bridge!
I know there are a couple of others fairly close too.

Another interst has been piqued here: I'm in Swansea, not so very distant from Noggin, and not all that far from Newport...
Now all we need is some sucker to organize something and we'd be well away!

Hi there Dolt; Isn't there a meets forum somewhere around? Might get a bigger response if it was obvious that a meet was being mooted. Where is Wales? sounds like a geographical query.

Well It's nice to see that the Welsh are about.
I'm English but living in Denbigh, North Wales - almost as far away as the Smoke.
I'll keep an eye on this coz I do get to Cardiff with work now and then.

Got some response anyway. But how does one get it together? Any ideas for a venue or what to do? I'm a useless organizer and never done anything like this before. Don't take this the wrong way but I'm open to suggestions/offers. It sounds easy until you think about getting it put together.
Colin.

Howdie... I'm in Cardiff, and last I checked it hadn't been thrown out of wales yet, though I'm sure it must be tempting
My idea on a meet is simple, pick a pub (preferably easy to direct to) suggest a few dates find out which is best for people and come up with a way to spot each other (towels are good for this ).

You definitely need an easy to find pub for those of us who are navigationally challenged.
would be fine as long as you don't arrange to meet anywhere near a swimming pool.

Right you need - day of the week (most likely Saturday or Sunday)
Is it going to be evening only or are we going to make a day of it?
How far ahead are we looking? A month, two months, sometime in the summer?
Venue - if it's the evening you'll be looking for a good pub. If we're doing a whole day a trip to st Fagans or cardiff Castle or some such could be included.
And you could try and drop a message on the home space of any other Welsh researchers we know of. (Matholwch the Apostate and Alji can be found via my friends list, and I think Mycelium is Welsh, too.

Right-o, taking the bit between my teeth... Saturdays are better than Sundays, because there'll be more things open, the pubs'll be open later and I won't have to miss a hike on the Sunday. Midweek is just a pain.
Making a day of it sounds an excellent plan; I've only been living here for three and a half years so I've not really had the opportunity for a day out in Cardiff yet . What does anyone else think?
Can I suggest a couple of provisional dates, say May 3rd or 10th? I hand in the first part of my thesis at the end of April and it'd be nice to do something a bit different to celebrate . Of course, if there are more convenient dates, that can be sorted.
I don't know about suitable venues in Cardiff, maybe Math could suggest one, or I could consult some of my friends who live there.
I've got to go out in a mo, but later or tomorrow I'll go knock-knocking on a few Researcher's doors.

Just a suggestion... First step may be to figure out who's going to be 'organizing' the meet, and start up a page, so you guys can talk in one place...

St Fagans would be a good place for a day.
Cardiff itself is easily get-at-able.
A page of our own would be a good place to leave messages and play around with dates.

If no-one objects, I'm quite happy to try and organize this. I've set up a page with a summary of the plan thus far for people to discuss and sign up - find it at A989869
Now, maybe I'm living up to my nickname here, but what's this St. Fagans thing that keeps being bandied about?
