They look similar so that fathers can't be sure it's not theirs, and that gave them a better chance of survival.

Correct. Nice one Cleo. Over to you. I wanted a quickie there. Thanks.

My only criticism is that you didn't put 'fathers' in quotes.
'Mother's baby, father's maybe' is the moral of this question.

What a flurry of activity!
Point of order (re post 3976, by Seamus)
Beast of Burden (Some Girls)
"Your cloak is a spirit shroud" Lantern (Their Satanic Majesties Present)
Sticky Fingers
Enigma (The film) produced by Sir Michael Jagger, as were all of the above
The cloak (in my mind) related to *Undercover* the 1983 album but as Seamus was definitley on the right track, everything has panned out just dandy
ps Sir Ed isn't English

Thanks Toxxin. Very interesting question
Montana Redhead has illustrated the moral of the question nicely by pointing out that babies don't look so similar in the eyes of their mothers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm not sure how popular this question is going to be, and I've had a terrible time trying to present in a way that is at all legible, but here it is.
The ``` are just my attempt to line the numbers up properly. I hope you are able to see the long division set out there. The number divides exactly. There is no remainder. There is only one possible answer to the division. What is it?
```````````````````x x 8 x x
`````````------------------------
x x x ) x x x x x x x x
``````````x x x x

````````````````x x x x
```````````````````x x x
``````````````````--------
``````````````````````x x x x
``````````````````````x x x x
``````````````````````=======
If anybody knows a way of setting this out more clearly then please do.

Yep Cleo. I would have loved to discuss the issues raised by Montana; but it would have given too much away. I thought we'd have a non-trivial question by way of contrast. It threw a lot of people I think. Nothing cryptic there. Just a question of knowing or figuring out the answer.
Yours looks like pure logic which is also cool. I get fed up with the n-part questions.

You could probably create a guide entry for it and enclose it in tags... that should keep the spaces and use a fixed-width font, allowing you to position everything in the edit field of the entry editor.
Hmmmmmmmm....
oops!!!
Cleo Posted Oct 30, 2002
Profuse apologies!!!
I've made a slight mistake.
The third line down should be a three figure number rather than a four figure number. I will repost it soon.
How did that happen. I checked it a million times, almost.
