Lamentable as the demise of the Pub would be, and I hope it never really comes to that, you may want to point out that Pub is an abbreviated form of 'Public House'.
Because so much of the public has developed a concern over their health, when exposed to heavy volumes of second-hand smoke, reducing smoking in public houses should serve the 'public good'.
There's no reason that Pubs can't be as popular as ever with those who want to go for the original reasons; drinking, commaradarie, fomenting revolutions, singing, etc.
I'd go just to have a pint and sing 'there ain't noone more Irish than Barrack Obama'.

Nicely done
I know how much flack I'm going to draw for this, but I can't not point it out...
So, with less customers, many publicans...

Cheers all, I sorted out the grammatical bits, and FT - I think the link to the h2g2 Entry on Pubs covers your queries

Thanks
I may have rushed it into PR as I was a bit worried about the deadline! I've done some rejigging and changed things about a little, hope it reads okay still.

This Entry appears to be coming along well
Just a few minor nitpicks
Be careful with dates:
<> should be <>
<> should be >
I think there may well be room for more links
<> should be antidote

um, thanks for the input, but 'antidot' is correct, it is a direct quote.
And I think I'll leave the dates alone too, thanks.

Ah, I rescind the first instance of incorrect date, apologies.
However, I think I have the most relevant links added to the Entry - other links would be there just for the sake of it, not subjective at all.
If more are to be added at a later stage, that is up to a sub-editor.
Peer Review is about content first on the most part. I'm happy to see grammatical and punctuation errors highlighted, but it really isn't the be all and end all of PR is it, as those types of errors are most usually found at a later stage in the process

Is there any evidence that the decline in smoking-related diseases is directly linked to the smoking ban rather than just being a coincidence? I would have thought one year is much too short a time to be drawing any conclusions.

Oh, you might also want to mention that now, although the insides of pubs and clubs etc are smoke-free, you have to run a gauntlet of smokers in order to actually get in to the pub, meaning that your clothes often end up stinking of fags anyway.

Thanks Cyz, there's no direct evidence, I think it's more to do with the little over ten year NSF, so I'll reword that, ta.
Oh, and from the Entry: "Cigarette butts quickly littered the streets, and just entering a building meant running the gauntlet of the smoking crowds. For many this was not what being 'free from secondhand smoke' was all about."

Just an FYI:
The decline in smoking diseases has been evidenced, as it were, by other, longer-lasting bans, in other countries. Some smoking bans are 15 years long or more, plenty of time to statistically establish that they have a worthwhile effect.

All those poor smokers must be fuming The nanny state has them tucked up like (smoked) kippers - but now at least we non-smokers can inhale deeply of the pure exhaust fumes and methane of unspeakable origin and smile benevolently at those unfortunate addicts...
I enjoyed that Matt learned some things. It's an issue that gets people proper het up. I have mixed feelings about it myself, being a non-smoker (parents were both heavy smokers) who likes the smell of it and dislikes government interference but recognises the right of people not to have to breath other folks' fumes... etc
