Riight... so, I grew up with a father who never expressed any religious preferences at all, and a mother who used to be a die hard atheist...
For the last couple of years, my mother has changed a lot - not only does she seem to have become 'religious' but she also truly believes she can ease pains with her hands. She says she can't help everyone, because some will simply be more receptive than others... and one of my uncles is a well known (in Finland, that is) 'healer' as well.
And all this time, I've been a bit dubious about it all - maybe from experiencing way too many attempts by various 'Christian's to 'save' me in my youth.
I don't think my mother is lying to me, but maybe she's like... imagining things? That's what I've been thinking lately, but that explanation just doesn't seem to hold up...
And then it happened to *me*! Dang!
What?
Long story...
First of all - the heating at my w*rk isn't quite adequate considering the size of the room we all have our desks in. Most of my colleagues dress warmly, but I don't, because I've learnt to relax.
I once read an article on some tribe in Africa (in a part where the nights get quite cool) who allowed their body temperature to drop slightly below normal during nigth time and thus reduced the difference in air temp vs body temp, which would allow them to suffer low temps without freezing.
Ever since I read that article, I've tried applying relaxation as a method to cope with cool temps, and I've often experienced people wondering if I'm not freezing. My reply has been 'no' but when those people have touched my skin, they say I *feel* cold.
One day a pregnant colleague of mine who, with 1½ month left, suddenly got palpitation and felt all hot and weak at work...
Now, I *know* I've got cold hands because of the long explanation above, so I offered her a 'cold compress' on her forehead (my hands).
And it was amazing - I could feel her face relaxing under my hands, and when I removed them, she said she felt sooo much better and could I please continue doing whatever it was that I did?
So I applied my still cold hands to various areas of her face, gently, smoothly... and she almost fell asleep, that's how relaxed she felt.
So - do I just have a knack for where to apply the smoothing coolness of my hands - or do I (as that uncle of mine keeps saying) have 'the gift' too?
Still dubious, still doubting - but that colleague of mine was in seventh heaven after having my hands clutching most of her face!

In the end it is the result that counts.
Maybe your relaxation slows your metabolism somewhat, resulting in less heat generated. A mini-wintersleep.
You don't need religion for this kind of healing, just trust.
Many years ago I could 'suck' a fierce headache with my fingertips from my wife, just by thinking it away. Even better, after a few times it never came back. And it was not something she invented to humour me.

Thanks Marijn! Your explanation is soothing - I'm afraid I'm being a bit spooked about this whole thing...

Titania, this is fascinating. You should talk t both your uncle and your mother about this. We all possess talents that can be developed. I really believe that some people have healing energy. You need to read up on this.

What Hypatia said.
Whatever it is, it doesn't have anything to do with religion.
I think it's really .

We may indeed possess extraordinary abilities and hidden talents. Our connection with the universe may extend beyond the boundaries of space and time...
But remember what DNA said: "Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?"

I believe that being cared for, by another person, will help someone relax.
I believe that your touch was a strong sign for the receiver that you care for her, so she could relax and feel well.
On the other hand, I really would like to believe in healing, and somewhere inside, I want to experience it too!
