Silence
So massive
So compact
So intense
That it sets my ears
Ringing with emptiness
That it sets my head
Aching with hollowness
Impossible absurdity
Unreachable goal
And yet, I dream of it
I long for it
I yearn for it
To no avail
My wish prevails
*bangs head against wall, having lost the inspiration somewhere on the way*

I would go mad without a regular dose of silence. Titania, if you haven't read it, look for a little book of short essays by Annie Dillard, called _Teaching a Stone to Talk_. There's a brilliant little essay about silence, and also a favorite of mine about encountering a weasel.

The silence is probably one of the reasons that I love the forest so much. Only babble there are the voices in my head
But I also recognise your #¤%Y#¤%& in having half something and where did the rest go?

There are people who are terrified of silence and who fill every waking moment with activity or meaningless drivel to keep from meeting it. Then there are those of us who can't survive without it and find it as satisfying as a lover's embrace. I think that we can take the poetry of Tagore and substitute silence for death and the poetry is still valid.
Very lovely, Titania. Thank you.

Hyp, my mom was like that -- had the radio on all night. The silence kept her awake!

I live in the country, so apart from the wind, river, birds and other wildlife, and so forth, it's usually pretty quiet...
No, I was referring to the head banging..

Dear Titania (& Ripley)
Ancient Chinese Philosophers Say,
The Way Is To Accomplish Without Striving
Head Banging Is Bad For The Head
Wot Follows Is in Capital Letters For Clarity And Simplicity
The Idea, Is That You Should Read It To Yourself In Your Own Voice
Here Is The Rhythm
I LOVE YOU
YOU LOVE ME
WE ARE IN LOVE
IN LOVE ARE WE
Here Is The Rhyme
SPEECH IS SILVER,
SILENCE IS GOLD,
THUS SAY THE WISE,
THUS SAY THE OLD
TO LITTLE CHILDREN
IN OUR KINGDOM,
THIS IS ALWAYS GENTLY TOLD,
SPEECH IS SILVER,
SILENCE IS GOLD
TALK IS CHEAP,
TALK IS BRASS,
TALK OUT OF YOUR MOUTH
OR,
TALK OUT OF YOUR ARSE
AND WHERE THERE IS BRASS THERE IS MUCK,
AND TARNISHED COPPER AS WELL,
AND THE DEVIL TALKS CRAP
IN EVERY TONGUE,
DOWN
IN
DINGLY DELL
SO SAVE ALL YOUR BRASS AND COPPER TALK,
AND YOUR SILVER WILL TURN TO GOLD,
AND TELL ME ALL ABOUT IT ALL,
WHEN YOU ARE WISE
AND
OLD

Charityplayer To Titania
Sleep On It,
Sleep Tight Tonite,
Tomorrow Again,
Tomorrow Write
Silence,
That Sets My Ears Ringing,
With Emptiness,
That Sets My Head Aching,
With Hollowness
Impossible Absurdity,
Unreachable Goal,
Silence,
Reaching Down,
Into My Soul
Silence So Massive,
So Compact
So Intense,
Silence In My Head,
In My Every Sense
Yet Still I Dream of it,
I Long For It,
I Yearn For It
But To No Avail
Silence,
Silence,
Let My Wish Prevail

I think the person might be on pre-mod, since there doesn't appear to be anything that breaks the house rules in the postings that are know visible...
I tried something new yesterday - since a lot of noise seems to come through my front door, I digged out an old duvet and pinned it to the door frame (on the inside of the door).
And what a difference it made!
Woken up this morning at 6.03
After fiddling for a bit (for some reason, the software failed to locate two of my three USB ports) I finally managed to get some statistics out of the clock.
But from what I've figured out so far, the only diagram I can get at the moment is movements/minute.
Will fiddle a bit more and see if I can create an image of the diagram (can't be copied/pasted) to put online.

Past tense of dig is 'dug': you dug out an old duvet. See the salon conversation for my spirited defense of irregular verbs in English. But now you know the etymology of the word 'dugout'.
