That sounds entirely feasible. There is an invisible hedgehog that follows me around and occasionally emits a whiff of methane. It's probably something like that.

To my mind, the unanswered question is whether the methane is actually originating on mars, or if it is that mars is downwind of us.
...and if that is what caused the inhabitants to flee.
