the perils of teetotalism

so many times have i seen tragic people on this site cut themselves off at the prime of their lives and, get this, vow to be *alcohol and drug free* for their whole lives! yeah!
this is a sorry state of affairs, especially when they suffix their desires with the assignation that 'being insane is much better'. here is a list of reasons why being insane is no substitue for drinking fun:
1) people will think you are a t**t
i think thats fairly comprehensive. a dedicated 'im mad, me' mentality is no camoflage for a weak character and minimal social skills. the fact is that a little dabbling is no bad thing, and joining in will do wonders for you, your number of friends, and your confidence. Dr Heavy says get [fiddlesticked] up.

Unfortunatley so many times the "young" think they can only go out and have fun with their friends if they're a bit "knackered". Sad, but true. Alcohol and drugs seem to bolster those of low self-esteem. Truly - there's nothing great about either one. If you can't have fun without being under the influence, then you really should seek help. Does that mean you should never drink? Heavens no, but until you can handle alcohol with a restrained hand - then better off to leave it alone. As to the drugs... well, I've seen too many friends start out with pot in their teens, then move on to harder stuff in their late teens, early 20's, and now some of them are dead. Not all of them mind you, still, every one of them was precious. I am not a teetotaller by any means. But it's not the "alter of youth" that it's cracked up to be.
Moderation... (in all things but !!!) Just be good at being you. If they like you better when you're sauced then when you're sober...take the hint.

Since you're under age in this country (and will be for a few more years yet), you'd do well to remain as you are until you reach legal drinking age.
Yeah, yeah... I know Unc's gonna call me one of those tragic ones.
*saves him the bother*
OK, so I'm tragic, I can live with it.
But I heartily agree with Michele on this, too - you start drinking too young, especially during those teen years when you're always looking for a bigger thrill all the time, and you're gonna end up in trouble.

As long as when you do get drunk you're with people you trust, there's not a problem. How else are you going to learn without experiencing?? People can be lectured at until they're deaf, but they're still going to go out there and do it themselves. Don't be afraid to experience life, be it good or bad.

I should add...
At the same time though, everyone has the right to do what they want, so if someone has a conviction they're able to stick to, then good on 'em.

Maybe Heavy just had a bad experience with a *ahem* 'twit', who just happened to be sober.
People are people with or without drink - being sober doesn't make everyone a nice person to talk to. Just look at me, for example.

there was one guy on the site who said 'i am strongly anti-drink and anti-drugs because insanity is much better'
i took issue with the insanity as a substitute idea rather than the thought that you have to get bladdered to have fun. which you dont.

i remember seeing that one... can't remember who it was tho.
as far as young vices becoming old crutches tho, i have to disagree to a point. addiction is not borne out of drinking a beer when you're 15 or smoking the odd weed. some people are prone to addiction, others have an innate ability to resist it based somewhat on genetics and environment.
your friends should be able to respect your decisions, and you should respect theirs. still look out for one another, but be respectful.

with the addendum of abe lincoln: "- and party on, dudes!"

I, for one, agree with your point, Tom. It is quite lame, saying that. I do, also, agree with Michele- it's quite lame getting into drugs and alcohol in your teens, or ever... If you can control it- ok. But in your teens you rarely have the maturity to control anything.

i used to say i don't need alcohol, i can be insane without, but i dont think i was ever exactly *anti*drinks and drugs...i pretty much agree with UH here...
my brother's being all anti alcohol at the moment, and it's really irritating
he's also decided to be a vegetarian for no good reason that i see, specially since he likes meat
actually, i'm getting a bit worried about him

How old is he?
And I'm quite anti-alc, (stopped Mike's drinking) and I know it's annoying to others, but I can't stand the breathe... So he can either drink or kiss me. He chose kisses

Hehehe, I'm actually quite anti-, but I'm sure we all know that.
I won't have a go at anyone specifically for drinking - I'm not that bad - but I do have a problem with drinking culture and have developed quite an attitude after years of being told "it's cool to drink!!!!".
It's all down to personal choice, I'll respect other people's decision to drink if they'll respect my decision not to. Doesn't mean I approve of it though .

That's right! The person could have a very good reason (besides higher intelligence ) not to drink, such as he/she has experienced alcoholism in their families and they don't want to be like that alcoholic person, or alcohol makes them feel physically very bad, or they do really stupid stuff when they're drunk and they don't like dealing with the fallout afterwards...
You never know. They may just not like the lack of control that follows. It's not for everyone. It seems to be a teenage right of passage though...

im nto advocating getting wasted. im advocating having fun. i can have fun without getting drunk or using substances. im just a bit bemused by people who cant have fun with said substances. their persecution complexes tell them that they arent cool enough to do it, so they make sure they limit their horizons of cool...or something. that wasnt expressed too well.

But if you can have fun without using substances that are known to harm your body - why use them?

I understand where you're coming from, Unc, I really do. And I'm not saying I'm going to completely avoid it for the rest of my life. I'm too young. I'm illegal and underaged. I can have a good time without it and I'm not prepared to take the risks...that's all
