Sho - employed again!

Unfortunately, not the one where I get to lounge around watching daytime TV all day with the occasional lecture thrown in but the one where I work my backside off and do the studying on the side.

But anyhooooo... I'm nearly done with the registration for an OU course so eventually, at some point, I should have a BA(Hons) in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

Don't worry, lazy students who don't do anything all day are either just a story or will never finish studying.smiley - winkeye

What a fantastic idea! Can you access from Germany then? And will you finoish up in politics? (I'd vote for you)smiley - starsmiley - star

thanks - and Tav, I think you're right but it is an enduring mental picture!

I have the cup you brought over for me for drinking endless tea while I study. I'm very excited but it doesn't start until 7th May.

And yes, access via the internet and email is going to make this a lot easier than when I did English Language A-level by correspondence about 19 years ago - that was all by post. There aren't any residential courses for this one, although if any are on offer I'll see if I can join one.

The hardest thing about OU study? You'll hear people talking about balancing it with a full-time job, etc. - but for me it's looking at the prospectus to pick the next course thinking "hey, *that* looks cool! No wait, what about that one...hang on, there's one about ..."

Dea.. - call me Mrs B!

I finished up my OU degree (in Earth Sciences) 4 years ago now and there are still somedays I look around for my textbook and rock samples! The joy in picking something you are interested in rather than doing a fulltime degree for a job is that the studying feels like fun!

Oh, well done for taking the plunge. I only decided the other week that I am going to start on a course this year that I had vaguely said I*d do when I retired. I thought - "why wait till then?"

I hope it doesn't mean we'll be seeing much less of you around here, though.

Oh KB I'm so with you there. I finally plumped for PPE because although the Language ones, the Psycology ones and the Open Degree all appealed (I could see myself doing 57 courses for the Open Degree and thinking "oh I'll just do this one...") I've always been interested in philosophy and politics but have never been really sure that I want to study just the one subject.

TC the thing that really took the getting over was the cost! it's nearly triple the price over here, but I really don't fancy doing a degree in German which was the other option.

Deakie - have you thought about doing another degree? an MA or something?

And realistically yes, it's most definitely going to eat into my h2g2 time smiley - sadface but it will eat into my reading time and my TV time too - but it's really about time I shifted my sorry backside and moved the grey matter a bit.

I'm sure you'll be in great demand as a sommelier, RF. Ham up your English accent and you'll have them falling over themselves to take you on.

no blog RF you naughty boy - I can hardly keep up with the one I have!

Kelli - didn't I see somewhere that you'd started a PhD? Any chance of finishing that?

Thanks all for the encouragement - Gwennie recommended a book about essay writing for the social sciences and that arrived today, so now I can get started...

Well done, Sho. I've been doing OU courses for the past two years and I'm loving it. Of course, I don't have to juggle full-time work and study, but Real Life gets in the way in other ways. (I have an assignment due tomorrow, this is *supposed* to be 'assignment week' and I've already lost two days to hospital appointments.smiley - rolleyes)

Do they make allowances for any health-issues that crop up for you, CD? They seem to be pretty good about that from what I've heard.

Just waiting for my registration docs to arrive - it should be sometime next week. So I'm getting some recreational reading in before I don't have time any more.
