A Conversation for The Don't Panic Help Centre
Can I change the title of a conversation I started?
F.L.O.S.P. Started conversation Apr 8, 2003
I created a conversation in the Ask H2G2 community section, and was promptly told that the title was misleading. Is there anyway to change the title when it appears in the listing?
F.L.O.S.P.
No, you cannot.

You can change the titles of the next posts, but not the one that appears on the conversationlists.
Maybe the only way is having the first post yikesed and be given the chance to change it.
No, you cannot.

There's nothing wrong with the title you've used. I knew what you meant. It's similar to wording used in many news bulletins today. If it's good enough for the BBC news website it's good enough here on h2g2.

"Maybe the only way is having the first post yikesed and be given the chance to change it."
The Yikes button is only for use with postings that break the House Rules. The Moderators would not change the title of a thread. They are specifically briefed not to change postings made by Researchers over than to star out swearwords or remove personal details and unsuitable URLs.

Abi, the foreign language made me too concise again. I should have added something like you did, and that the creator of the yikesed post gets an email giving the opportunity for a suggested change of only the parts that conflict with the house rules.
I see now that my post can be seen as an invitation to use the yikes button to change something unwanted by the poster but fully within the rules.
No, you cannot.

Well do you not think it would be a good thing to be able to change conversation titles... I mean spelling mistakes living forever are irritating!!!
Can this not be suggested to someone or do you need a 'title'(ACE etc.)???
No, you cannot.
Marjin, After a long time of procrastination back lurking Posted Apr 13, 2003
I don't think the editors will ever allow a change in an already submitted posting, not even the title, unless it clearly breaks the house-rules.
You can of course always try it as a suggestion in
<./>Feedback-Features</.>, but I give you very little chance.
No, you cannot.

There was an interesting discussion about having a feature that allowed editing of a post for a specified number of minutes after it had been posted. Certainly this is a feature that appears on a lot of Community sites - the Handbag message boards for one. However, I know that there was some concern that this might be open to abuse.
If you think it is a good suggestion, then please do suggest it at <./>Feedback-Features</.>. We can't promise anything, but are always keen to get new suggestions for the site.
No, you cannot.

Personally, I don't think it's a necessary feature. As long as you always use the Preview button before posting, you almost never spot any mistakes in the posting straight after pressing 'Post'.

That could be just you though, Rho. I almost always spot any mistakes I have made just after posting even though I usually preview (hence being such a _@o"). There's something about the way it looks once it's too late - but I've met that in other situations too. So maybe it's just me after all.

I preview too, but i concentrate so hard on the actual post that i forget to check the subject title. It took me a long time to notice that people replying to posts _were_ actually changing the post title

It takes some people a long time to realise that there _is_ a title! I saw that quite a bit on the BBCi Message Boards.
And this is a situation where the last title was appropriate, and reading this title is essential
