I'm sorry...
I seem to have missed something...
Exactly why was this Guide Entry highlighted for our interest when it hasn't got any?

I agree, if anything should be highlited it should be OMEGA. Their watches are so tackily bulky, overpriced and designed for blokes who think that wearing one will make them a bigger 'fanny magnet' than James Bond. Hikers need to be warned that if they buy one they will be seen as being a "RICH TOSSER WHO PROBABLY IS HUNG LIKE A BABY HAMSTER".

Yes, we know it's a number and what it is. Any reason why the Greeks called it (effectively) "P"?
They should have had some nice word for it along the lines of groat, or fathom.

Irving Washington - Gone Writing Posted Dec 4, 1999
Well, don't we have special numbers that are so important yet lenghty that we abbreviate them to a letter? How about "e", which always gives me problems because I'm not a math person and these logrithms scare me!!!! Sorry about that. Finals coming up. Anyway, I'm guessing that it started as a place holder in an equation like area equals "p" times the radius squared, until they figured out what "p" actually was. When they DID figure it out, it was scary and long enough (can you tell I don't like numbers?) that they just kept the "p" instead!
~Irving, who's just guessing

I think pi is interesting. Read my lengthy description of pi at http://www.h2g2.com/A208552. I use it to hypnotise people.

It's a great film. Based on true facts and has wonderful hypothesis around it. Very unlikely we would actually discover THE Answer but a nice idea of what would happen if anyone did .

That wasn't the question.
The question was "Why the (insert amusing expletive that no-one except a Red Dwarfer wounder understand) is this guide-entry approved? It's absolute tiger (same expletive, on the grounds that repetition is amusing.) "

Ah, that *was* the question (literally). Quoting the message I replied to, 'Any reason why the Greeks called it (effectively) "P"?'. Or is it you just pressed [Reply] to the last message?
Anyway, hope the editor answers your question
