Freedom, that's a good question, what is it? It means something different to everyone. The best sense of freedom is getting out of the house, going out to green spaces and enjoying it.

Walking is generally open to most of us and fortunately freely available. Even if you have to walk near a busy town there are places that are surprisingly quiet and reward you with a worthwhile.

I have found my walks full in to two types , the circuit and the there and back again. The circuit is obviously the most varied as the there and back is on the same path. Both types of walk are improved by a secondary activity, this is especially relevant on the there and back walk. Such activities are photography, (you hardly notice the time passing) watching the wildlife and just looking around your surroundings. If you walk a busy canal the boats and wildlife you keep you amused for hours.

A variation on the there and back is walk out and get a bus back to the start point this is particularly rewarding when coastal or woodland /open country walks.

The most satisfying is the circuit walk especially woodland and downland, if you have an added hill fort or castle even better you can spend a full day out there, and you often get happy surprises. I have seen classic aircraft flying overhead, exercising racehorses, rare birds (I saw a golden oriel once very rare in the UK), hares and some fantastic views, rural buildings and colourful sky s and sunsets.
Town walking can also be very interesting, a town with some history has a lot to offer, coffee shops and Water stones book shops being an added bonus; Some towns can be very surprising for example Southampton, Stafford, Tamworth and Exeter are full of surprising. Towns such as Winchester Bath and Salisbury rarely disappoint.

If you are fortunate enough to visit abroad town walking is a must, if you drive around you will miss so much of interest, and some world beating coffee shops.
