Why do islands on the horizon appear to have cut in pieces at each end? I know it is a mirage like you get with heat waves in the desert on a hot, sunny day but does anybody know how it works and why?

I thought from a distance looked like a polar bear?

A polar bear could be all right. A bipolar one would be unpredictable....
