h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

A great fan of order and organisation I feel we should have a seperate thread to debate the pros and cons of each album, also putting in our own preference.

As I have freely admitted before I own little of their albums yet I remain largely certain that if I did, Sgt. Pepper would still be the top, or certainly top 3, of their albums in my opinion. Other than being the first concept (not much of a concept, but it had one regardless) album, of which I am a great fan as I like the cohesion, it is an interesting blend of pop rock, rock 'n' roll (in the traditional sense, ie Elvis and Buddy Holly, not the US sense, ie Marilyn Manson and Maroon 5 [these are clearly not similar in genre]) and psychedelia, plus Within You, Without You adds that slight blend of Eastern experimentation which acts as a nice centrepoint for the album to relax upon, before charging up again.

Another thing about this album that charms it for me is I often find myself listening to the beginning just to hear the first few strums of the guitar, before the vocals start, as they are capturing but the problem is once I listen to that, I find it very difficult to stop listening until I have to - ergo its finished.

I find it hard to pick a favourite album, though I recently bought myseld revolver. It's pretty good. I love the song "Here, There and Everywhere".

As I think I've said elsewhere, Magical Mystery Tour would be at the top, followed by Abbey Road, with Sgt Pepper's in third. I've only listened to two other albums (white album & Let it be).

Come on, someone put forward some rationale towards another best album. I heard a song the other day that was Beatles-esque but I can't remember the title, will post it when I hear again. Also I hear Macca is releasing a new album soon, anyone looking forward to it? I've never heard his solo stuff; don't care too much for his work with The Wings either.

You should care about his wings stuff, Venus & Mars is a great album. I like his solo stuff on the whole, though Driving Rain, which unless I am mistaken is his latest album, is poor.

ok rational thinking, Magical Mystery Tour is good as it has only one rubbish song (Blue Jay Way), most of the other songs are well known hits and on the whole its the best feel good album I've ever heard.

Yeah. I was given Driving Rain for Christmas a couple of years ago and I couldn't get into it. Though think a part of that was coz I hadn't heard any of it before I got it.

I've heard one from his latest album. It wasn't too bad. Song called Fine Line.

Not heard it. I quite liked Flaming Pie, though some of the songs were rubbish.

Um.. off the top of my head, Young Boy, World Tonight, Flaming Pie and Beautiful Night. A few others as well which I can't remember just now. You?

Well, it's been a while since I listened to it, but I have to admit that I did like Young Boy and Little Willow. think there was one or two I wasn't so fussed about, but I can't remember what ones they were.

Don't like the song we were singing, or little willow. Think there's one called "really love you" that I don't like either. Oh and the one that starts: I used to be bad but I don't have to be bad no more.

Oh yeah. That one. Not so fussed on that one for definate. Just too sore throat or something.

My favorite Beatles album is Revolver,; probably because my favorite Bealtes song is ELeanor Rigby. The album has the energy and verve of the early stuff, and the beginnings of complexity of their later work. It is a nice blend, a transition album, and a lot of fun. Who hasn't chanted along to Taxman when they had to file their taxes? Or chimed in to Yellow Submarine? Great album.

I still haven't heard it in full, so I can't reallly comment on Revolver. I will be getting it for Christmas though.

The thing I find about Beatles albums is that for me, my favourite changes all the time. At first it was Abbey Road, then Magical Mystery Tour, the Sgt Pepper's, now the White Album

It captures loneliness with such elegant simplicity.

Can't argue with that, though still not my favourite Beatles song.

i think that it is because the lyrics are depressing but the music is not quite so, and therefore it is a perfect mixture which you can feel happy listening to at any given time.

but i have to agree, it is not their best!
