Is there anyone else out there who is also so fed up of celebs? I never understood the world's fixation with them. Are they not only human like the rest of us? They're boring. Tell me, who genuinally needs to know what the Beckhams had for lunch this afternoon because thats how obssesive it's getting. I don't care, it's none of my business, I'm not even remotely interested. The worst part of it is, when you read something about a 'celebrity' it's usually a lie anyway! So basically, what I'm trying to get my head round here, is that people enjoy reading uninteresting lies about people they have never met!

I think people like to dream about a life they could have had (this is a lousy way to spend your life - why don't you CHANGE IT INSTEAD OF DREAMING ABOUT IT?). It leans towards the idea that these people are 'better' than us of the proletariat because they are hoplessly insecure extroverts. If anything, these people are 'worse' than us.

But these people are the same as everyone else. They're no more special because they can there name in a paper. Why can't people see that?

I don't really know, but I suspect it's part of the 'armchair culture'. People know these 'celebrities' are just the same, but by watching these people on TV and reading about them in newspapers they feel like they live a part of this person's life. They'd rather do this from the comfort of their couch than go out and change their own.

how lazy. and unfulfiling

I get annoyed when it's people like Jade Goody who are on the cover of every magazine - who are famous basically for being famous. I don't care what's happening in her love life, what she's wearing or where she goes on holiday!

Celebs are people everyone knows about, and when they're super cool people like Shakespearean actors, and they're *still* people everyone knows about, they're easier to fix on than the star of your local amateur dramatic group. If they're actually intelligent celebs they'll get columns published in the papers and you can read them saying smart things ... and although your next-door neighbour may be intellectual, he doesn't get his columns in the paper because he hasn't been in any best-selling movies. That's the way I see it, anyway.

It seems to me that the cult of celebrity has replaced religion in our need/desire to worship.

It bothers me that it (arguably) does the same job that religion used to!

In that it occupies our time and energy, and stops us asking too many questions.

ye but that rubish, as clebs are the most boring people they are only out feel wanted the best movie stars and artists you dont ever see them in the paper or read about then as they dont want to be clebs as they are good at what they do and get well regared for what they do take Tom hanks he is a great actor but you never ever see him in the paper do doing anything, clebs just want the attention they get thats all.

I agree with that. Celebs don't earn their fame by being talented. They just use lots of clever publicity stunts. Then agian it's not so clever, they're just lucky that there are many stupid people in the world who fall for it.
