h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

These guys make movies that I like because they are refreshingly offbeat. My favorite is probably "O Brother, Where Art Thou":

- "Them syreens did this to Pete. They loved him up and turned him into a horny toad."

- "Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin?"

- Car explosion? No problem ... except the old flivver goes straight up about 5 feet, then straight down onto its tires.

- A nifty tribute to "Wizard of Oz" in a marching scene.

- All that wonderful music - a Grammy for album of the year!

Other good ones - "Fargo", "Raising Arizona", "The Big Lebowski", ...

"i don't want Fop, i'm a Dapper Dan Man damm*t"

Though i personally prefer 'The Big Lebowski'

Jeff Bridges is great as The Dude

and I love the bowling dream/trip sequence

The Big Lebowski is one of my favourite films ever. Every time I think about it I get the urge to watch it again. John Goodman is brilliant in it as he is in most of their films - he reminds me of a really obnoxious guy I used to know. Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers makes a strange appearance as one of the nihilists (is that how you spell it?) and of course Jeff bridges is brilliant as the constantly stoned Dude, but my favourite character has to be the bowler in purple called Jesus (Played by John Leguizamo, another Coen Bros. regular).

Strangely enough its just started on filmfour, but I don't get any channel 4 since I moved from Scotland to Belgium. No fair!

I have to agree that the Big Labowski is brilliant ( O brother is a different kettle of fish altogether- a better one I think. )

Just a quick ammendment to a previous entry, John Turturro, plays the skin-tight jumpsuit wearing Jesus. And yes- he's one of my favourites in the film too.

from this thread I was inspired to watch the big lebowski again. And my favourite character is also "the jesus". John turturro apparently was asked to cameo for the film but he was not happy with the character so the coen's gave him free reign to write his own. oh and I just realised that my previous quote is inaccurate....but hey....ho!!!!!! THATS JUST LIKE MY OPINION MAN

I had a feeling that John Leguizamo was the wrong name - I think he was in Son of Sam.

The Big Lebowski is definately my favorite Coen Brothers film so far, even over Fargo, so that's sayin' somethin'.

I haven't watched it for a long time, but the scene where they attempt to scatter the ashes, and haven't checked which way the wind is blowing...funny, but rather sad too.

Em.... oops - that should have been Summer of Sam I think (not a comedy but a great film anyway)

Haven't seen Summer of Sam - There's a bit in Lebowski, where John Goodman's character is scattering the ashes, and it blows back in their faces....I'm sure it's Lebowski...haven't seen it for some time though...

Yes, they are scattering the ashes of Steve Buscemis character, who suffered a heart attack.

The bowling scene where John Turturro makes out with his bowling ball is pure classic.

I'm partial to "Oh brother". It's outstanding and I crack up as soon as anyone says anything in that movie.

An underrated movie from the Coens is "Barton Fink" which I also adore. Brilliant filming.
