Regarding the question of things translating to an international audience...
I've always been a total fan of British comedy, especially Monty Python, and not been so keen on American stuff but honestly...Spinal Tap. I know this could go on forever and it's a really obvious point but - how brilliantly-observed is that?
Nowadays the term 'LOL' is used a lot but one of the few times I've genuinely laughed out loud at a film was in that part where they're performing in those coccoon-type things and one of them doesn't open. Agh it's got me again!

Best moment:
The 11' high stone henge desceneding from above the stage to be danced around by midgets
David St Hubbins goggle-eyed stare and his subsequent whooping scene of disbelief are indescribably funny.

Anyone seen 'Best in Show' by the same team?
Well, several of the key players, anyway...
The two leads from Tap are brilliant but *totally* unrecognisable in this 'Tap for Crufts' gem!

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho Posted Mar 9, 2005
It wasn't until I was following links around the IMDb four or five months ago that I realised Spinal Tap and Best in Show were made by (and pretty much starred) the same people Had to do several double takes to reconcile myself to the fact that Harlan Pepper was also Nigel Tufnel
They also made A Mighty Wind, which I didn't find anything like as funny

And, of course, Spinal Tap's bass player is Harry Shearer, who does a host of voices for the Simpsons. It's a small world.

He was in Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind, but not Best in Show. He puts himself about a *lot*. You'd figure that anyone who's a regular cast member on The Simpsons would't have to do anything else , but he's got fingers in many pies. He has a regular Sunday morning programme on a Los Angeles Public Radio station, he was in a whole host of films including Ghost Dog, and I saw him in something else recently but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. Hell, he was even in a Abbott and Costello movie years ago

My favourite line has to be when he's talking about the album cover:
How much more black can you get? None, none more black.
Shame Metallica stole the design

I don't mean to be rude, but I don't find a lot of american humour that amusing not that I think its bad its just not my thing, but it was good to see a succesfull take on rock bands (not just british) absolutely spot on film.
Nigel Tufnel: You can't really dust for vomit.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
David St. Hubbins: It's such a fine line between stupid, and clever.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
David St. Hubbins: Well, I'm sure I'd feel much worse if I weren't under such heavy sedation.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
David St. Hubbins: Dozens of people spontaneously combust each year. It's just not really widely reported.

I was trying to resist turning this into a quoting thread, but...

The sad thing is many of us Americans actually thought that Spinal Tap was a real band, they portrayed the classic rock band so perfectly.
