Thgough my idenity is not that well hidden, I'd hate to think that anybody out there knows me (except for the one researcher that I introduced to H2G2. I come here for a bit of better quality company than I get amongst my ***normal*** work colleagues!

I've been around here for a while, and I still don't know anybody.. I just start to recognize ppl's nicknames. I quite like it here though... (I am not from "over there"..)

But Vakuum, if you knew my name, would you know me any better. If you read any of my posts, you know quite a lot about me: I'm perdantic, full of useless facts, willing to talk ad nauseam on many subjects and I live in Ireland. What more do you need to know? The same applies to most researchers (not that they live in Ireland, but that you can know the person by reading their posts).
Of course this may be really a front: in reality, I'm a tone-deaf New Zealander who's about 5 foot 3 in height and is a virtual recluse who couldn't care less.

No.. I do agree with you. The name is not what makes a person know you. But I am just starting to recognize people now, as I only now have the chance to come her regulary. And of course i regocnize the nicknames, because if noone had a nickname it would be kinda hopeless to know who you are talking with. So in that sence: the nickname/name have a little thing to say, because it names the personality you get an impression of.
Hm... did that make sence, or should I come back when I have not spent the evening in the bar and am really tired?

It might just turn out though, when you find someone of similar interests and opinions - i.e. who pops up in the same forums as you do regularly, they may be someone who had a similar education or come from a similar background or similar area to you, in which case you might know them. They might have gone to the same school back then, or work in the same company now, or you might know them from your University, Club, Church or other place where people of similar interests might be thrown together.

The chances are small, I think, to meet someone you know here. This society, exist of people from all over the world.. even though the odds are there, it's not a big chance to meet someone here, that you went to school with. I think...

Oh, I don't know... back in May 2000, I met about 40-odd people in Hyde Park, and guess what? Every one of them happened to be on h2g2!
And was it Kierkegaard or Dick van Patten who said "If you label me, you negate me"?

I've (literally) bumped into people ten years and 300 miles further on - we can all name some pretty weird coincidences I'm sure. Someone out there knows me...
... Looking forward to the Therbligs, by the way, Jim!

You'd be suprised.
Not long ago I was booking my holiday in Lesotho and I signed the tour place's website log book. Then I got an email from someone who had known a young boy named Duncan when he lived in Lesotho and was I said boy...and actually, yes I was
So on a website smaller than this I knew one person in real life - what are the chances I know many more here?

When I walk through Dublin at weekends I get overcome by a strange feeling ... any one of these people around me could be Duncan! I saw a picture of you and your brother a year or so ago drinking a pint on Sandymount Strand or something, but I have a woeful memory for faces, so every male in the 25 - 35 year range is treated with suspicious glances.

Well you would not have seen me last weekend as I was in Sligo. It was, as ever, wet
I have recently regained cointact with two school/college friends who I had assumed were never going to resurface. Is this some sort of manifestation of a 30th birthday approaching type mid-life crisis?

No. As you have observed elsewhere, it's a scary side effect of the internet as a whole. (I have just been contacted by my first boy friend, whom I certainly would not recognise if I passed him in the street. Last seen 40 years ago - ugh!)
