What's Wrong With Americans
Effers;England. Posted Jan 7, 2007
Yes I'm also wondering why this thread has suddenly been brought back to the light of day again, along with the one on American geography. All it will lead to is lots of annoyance and upset for American researchers as some people start posting the usual anti American nonsense.

I started posting here in spring of 2001 and loved this site. I found many intelligent and witty people that I conversed with and thought of as friends. Then came 911 and with it a few remarks on how Americans deserved what they got and other unfortunate remarks. Over the next few years the remarks and threads became more frequent and crueler. I found myself being drawn into these vehement arguments. A site that I once found joy in had become a conduit for Hate based on ones geographical home. Over time the behavior of a few bigots who were allowed to spew their anti-American dogma made many Americans including me eventually drifted away this site.

Welcome home starbirth. Hopefully people can now more easily make a distinction between a dislike for george W and his administration and Americans in general. It's looking like the coming election period could be quite exciting. I'm already getting a bit excited and I'm only a silly Brit.

Thank you for the welcome fanny its a pleasure to meet you. I have missed this place. I should have put in my last post while the anti American sentiment that infected this site was very disturbing there were still many good people that I missed. {* wonders if Della is still around.}
Fanny, yes the campaigning has already started. Seven Months of buncombe to go!

I'm interested in seeing how British politics works out as well - parallel to American trends, it looks like. Blair is on his way out and the British troops are getting out of Afghanistan - what's the word on the Iraq occupation?

Hi Lentilla. It's a big news story here about the reduction in troops in the Basra area. I heard an interesting discusion today on the radio where nearly everyone agreed it's part of Blairs desire to distance himself from Bush, now that Bush is on the way out, for Blair's legacy. Blair will be resigning fairly soon, he's made that clear. But I understood that we were doing it so that more troops could be commited to Afghanistan???
As I said Blair will soon resign and it's likely Brown will take over as PM. We aren't due a general election here for about 2 years. Have no idea at this stage who might win it, Labour or Tory. To be honest I'm finding American plitics a lot more intersting at the moment

I'm finding the old Chinese curse to be true! Every day around here is something new, weird or scary. South Dakota just voted down the anti-abortion bill (again) so I'm pleased about that. On the bad news side, the Supreme Court just ruled that detainees at Guatanamo can't contest their imprisonment.

Yes America is such a *big* country, compared with little Britain. We have variations within the UK, but nothing as to say the vast swathes of the Bible belt and then say the East coast. It really intrigues me what may happen if there was a Clinton/Obama or vice versa, administration. There been a fair bit about Obama here on the media. What chance do you think he really has?

God only knows fanny. I am hesitant to get into the subject of the war or politics here {At least not this early} as I would like to start posting again without specter or ideology.
One thing I will say however I hope the up coming elections will help the west to to come together and confront any and all extremist who think the way to change the world is by murdering our citizens in the street. The way things are going now we are only emboldening these elements.
By the way I love silly brits.

I agree Lentilla we live in interesting times. It seems this country is going through some turmoil similar to the 60's.

So far, Obama's smelling like roses. It looks like he'll be a centrist, that will try to pull both parties together. As to his chances - I have no idea. I would love for him to win, but I'm afraid this country's not ready for a black president.

It is a dreadful shame that's still the case!
Did you hear that our neighbour's PM, John Coward, was mouthing off about Obama? What a madman!

"I would love for him to win, but I'm afraid this country's not ready for a black president."
Which is why I placed a couple of quid at 7/2 on him gaining the Democratic Party nomination, but walked away from the 10/1 price on him actually winning the presidency.
Oh, and hello everybody. I see this thread has responded to a touch of CPR

I for one really hope he wins. It'd be a sad, sad day when the country that claims to be the best in the world discriminates against a person yet again for the *colour of their skin!*

I would be unsurprised if some proportion of the Anti-Obama vote stems from "sounds like Osama" which isn't much less stupid than because he's black.
But if you say "Barak Obama", it sounds like "heckle a terrorist" which might give a subconscious advantage.
For the record, Americans are great. Especially ones who send me stuff.

It's a little surprising to me that he's considered to be 'black' at all. He's mixed-race anyway...so he's just as much *not* black as *is*, visually. He looks a bit like a Mediterranean.
