It appears the flavor is apparently composed of
1 - ethyl acetate
2 - isoamyl acetate
Sounds very yummy

Isoamyl acetate and ethyl acetate are used for flavoring. The first tastes like banana, the second like pear. Maybe the ones you tasted were made to taste like banana.

I once bought some sweets called 'drop'' in Netherlands. I didn't realise that 'drop' is Dutch for liquorice

For some reason, your post made me think of a hard candy called horehound, which has medicinal properties. 
Licorice has some of the same antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties as horehound. It is mostly used in cigarettes because it dilates lung tissues to let smoke get in.
