Why do I always feel melancholic in the small hours?

Why do I find that certain moods are consistently prevalent at certain times of the day? Specifically I always feel strongly melancholic - reminiscing, looking at old photos, wondering 'what could've been', etc - in the small hours. I notice this more so, now that I work nightshift, but regardless of my situation, if I'm feeling melancholic, it'll be at this time.

Presumably it's brain chemistry related, but anyone got any deeper insights?

Its quiet there is less distraction allowing the mind to wander uninterrupted down the side-roads of the mind.smiley - ok

Indeed. I'd say the lack of stimuli causes your brain to go through your memory and such, for it to remain active. Similar to sensory deprivation tanks.

If EvilClaw were here, I expect he would blame it on brain leeches.

My money's on the Boogey Man.smiley - biggrin

The small hours are usually quiet an seem to pass slowly. The body (and brain?) is working slowly. It is probably difficult to be excited or enthusiastic about anything.

I love those wee small hours.

Maybe a touch of preconscious despair at the prospect of being short of sleep on the morrow.

I had problems with the wee small hours, but these new pants are great.
