I use the big blue IKEA bags for gardening. My salad and herbs survived the winter, the rest needs replanting. I had carrots, potatoes, peas, onions, and various flowers, all in custom soil/sand/manure mixes adapted to whatever was growing in them. Managed a good crop for the fact that the front yard is about 2 m² of paving slabs.

I only have 3 pots of different tomatoes at the moment and will get some herbs (in addition to a few flowers). I don't have the time to do more at the moment.

My pole beans [Kentucky Wonders] are growing like crazy. Once they poked their heads above the earth and saw the sun, they were off to the races!
The peas have been shy by comparison, but they seem to be responding now. The carrots, bless their souls, all came up. I planted them too close together, thinking not all of them would come up. I was wrong.
We're supposed to get temperatures in the 90s [F] for several days. This will be good for everything except the pansies, as long as I give them plenty of water.

You can just thin out the seedlings.
It would be a tiresome business if you had to put exactly one seed in each spot where you want a fully grown carrot!

Have some carrots started from cuttings, carrot tops leftover from the kitchen.
Remains to be seen how they'll produce, some seed at least, hopefully.
Culturing from an onion heel (1/2 " or so, from the base of the onion) in a 6" - 8" pot is the best method I've found for growing onions.
Seeds take two years and 1st year onion sets are more expensive and less reliable.

I'm not ready for onions and potatoes yet. I can buy tomato plants, or I can cadge some form my sister, who grows them from seed in a plant incubator in her kitchen.
