The Album of your generation

Well Guns N Roses Appetite for Destruction was out about the time I hit that age, and boy did that album appeal to me.
I also remember some git every lunchtime playing James Sit Down at least once a day when I was at college.

Rumours has some great tracks. Very different from the Fleetwood Mac of my day, though:

I still play Sit Down at every opportunity. I love James, and that one is something special.

Ach, I didn't mean to offend anyone with my earlier post. It just struck me that this was supposed to be about the HUGE albums of their day - whether you liked them or not.
I could list my favourite albums too - but then most others at the time would slag them off. I just thought it might end up flooded with lists of people's favourite albums rather what was originally intended. 'S all - if I misinterpreted then
And I appreciate that topic drift is the name of the game here, so feel free to ignore - I know you will anyway

I (perhaps mis-) interpreted the original question as something along the lines of "what were the albums which you heard / played most frequently?" more than "which were the most popular everywhere?". So I named some of the stuff I own(ed), or remember hearing at the clubs or on college radio.
Most of the kids I went to school with listened to either house music / mixes, or hair metal. The disco stuff I didn't listen to, and all the hair bands sounded alike, so I wouldn't really be able to identify any actual albums or artists.
I do remember that John Mellencamp's "Lonesome Jubilee" and Peter Gabriel's "So" were played a lot on the Top 40 and AOR radio stations when I was around 14-16. Those are the only really popular ones I can think of at the moment.

When I was sixteen, a young Scot charmed the pants off almost everyone with this album:
Fairytale - Donovan Leitch http://musicmp3.ru/artist_donovan__album_fairytale.html
"his recordings remain quintessential artifacts of the psychedelic era, capturing the peace and love idealism of their time to perfection." Allmusic

A.E. Housman 1896

When I was Young and Twenty - A. E. Housman
"When I was one-and-twenty
I heard a wise man say,
"Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your heart away;
Give pearls away and rubies
But keep your fancy free."
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.
When I was one-and-twenty
I heard him say again,
"The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
'Tis paid with sighs a plenty
And sold for endless rue."
And I am two-and-twenty,
And oh, 'tis true, 'tis true."

I don't think you're boasting Rudy.
The historical record speaks for itself.
The 1960s was the zenith of new music creativity
when so many genres spilled across the bounds of styles
and the musical spirit soared above the greed of record
company producers and their pre-established notions.
Then, sadly, came disco and the endless electronic loop
and real musicianship was swept back into the corners.

First impression of one of The Magic Band's members (as mentioned in the video):
"It sounds horrible, but they mean it to sound that way."

I accept it was influential, but was it really that successful, assuming you're measuring success in terms of album sales?
I'm no stranger to the avant-garde, but I prefer the more conventional tunes on Clear Spot; at least, those one which weren't horribly watered-down, presumably to get them played on US radio.

Thanks to this thread, the postman delivered me my new copy of Quo's 'Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon' this morning.
I have had it on the car stereo loud all day. That certainly WAS an album of MY generation.
Now, where's that denim jacket gone? How will I ever get it on?
