Anyone watching Boardwalk Empire? (warning: possible spoilers)
Ferrettbadger. The Renegade Master Started conversation Sep 12, 2012
Right well the great show starts this weekend and in anticipation I thought I'd start one of these hootoo "Anyone watching" threads.
I cannot wait personally, BE was occasionally trying just a bit too hard to be "The best show you have ever seen™" But despite that was frequently excellent and really got into its stride toward the end of S2
Loads of great stuff to happen I reckon!
Goodee!

That was an excellent opener. Nicely sets up a number of faultlines for the series. Most enjoyable.
But gutted they killed Manny off already. He was a great character.

He's also a former Al Capone.

Really?
I like how the violence, tension and lawlessness is ratchetting up already. I remember saying to people who claimed the first series was a little too slow that things will "action it up a bit".
Nuckie seemed remarkably unaffected by the Jimmy situation, I suspect that will change.

As soon as Manny got a new hat, you just *knew* he was going to get his head blown off But I reckon Harrow is doomed in the longer run which is a pity, he's an interesting figure.
Liked how they showed how the sale of the land by Margaret Schroeder impacted upon her relationship with Nucky, despite the veneer of respectability. I expect she'll be getting her rocks off with Slater a bit more often.

Yeah that certainly seems to be the direction of travel.
You know I love Boardwalk, but if I have one criticism it is that they don't really like doing subtlty do they? I mean everything is telegraphed and given subtitles or the hard of thinking. I think it is at its best when it trusts itself and the audience a bit more.
I am loving the possibility of Van Alden ending up part of Capone's crew that they seem to have set up in that first episode.

Gangster films don't really do subtlety. The only time I remember being surprised was when Joe Pesci got shot in Goodfellas

I dunno "The Sopranos" was operatic and melodramatic a lot of the time. But they also had the confidence to imply things and let the story tell itself.
I think for example we didn't actually need to see Gyp Rosetti beat the dog walker to death to know he is the "Funny how" character in Boardwalk. And that it would have been more powerful to be a little subtle about it.
Ditto the scene in which Teddy and the waiter denigrate the female aviator, it was just a bit too sledgehammer. I think the dialogue could have been lopads better and acheived the same end.

I could have done without things getting all Freudian in one of the last episodes of season 2.

Yeah. Blimey it is all warming up nicely. I guess, Roger bit aside, it was very much a "calm before the storm" episode.
Rosseti though is such a fantastic character, he seemed at first like a rubbish 2D Joe Pesci in Goodfellas clone but he is actually so much mor interesting.
Cant wait for next week!

The bit when Rosetti's lackey was trying to decline the dinner invitation and Gyp gave him that look was brilliant. Precisely what I was calling for earlir in the series, saying less with more.

Blimey... what a breathless couple of episodes. I rather suspect things are about to get pretty fiesty huh?
Wonder how Nucky is going to get out of it, presumably he isn't going to actually get whacked, at least not just yet (they would have to re-do the credits!).
I am assuming that Torio not going to the meeting is pointed, plus the obviousness of Al pushing forward. I wonder if Nucky will form a partnership with Al, partially explaining his rise?

Oh and of course none of the others know that Nucky now how a refinery and has arranged to take out Remus. So un-beknown to them Nucky actually has a few more cards than they think. A
And the Remus arrest scene was helluva funny!

Thingy = Rosetti of course.
Btw, how funny was the scene with the general's hat?
Joe - You gotta think lika general, si?
Rosetti - (thinks) I gotta get a general's hat!
And who was going to be insane enough to say he looked daft?

Well, well, well...
TBH I have been a bit concerned for Owen for a while now, and it was well telegraphed in the episode but still shocking. Showing the rest of his scene with Magaret from earlier in the episode was well done.
And presumably this means Micky Doyle have turned on Nucky as he is surely the only person in the room who had the means an opportunity to give Luciano the heads up on the plan?
