The problem is, the alternative to being self-depricating is being self-congratulatory. It's hard to say which is more unflattering, so I suppose it would come down to individual preference. It seems many people here are opting for the former.

I'm torn between feeling that self-deprecating is in the hopes that people say 'No, you're not at all like that!' and the other side, which is that you see the funny side of yourself and don't take yourself so seriously.

It's interesting though.

I actually detest people who go round saying how good they are at things, and how much they've achieved. <rolleyes? I much prefer modest people who simply state matter of factly what they've been up to, without looking for congratulation. Deeds should speak for themselves.

Here's a hug for those who are shy. smiley - hug I like shy people!

Oh, you've all run away! smiley - laugh

Aye, Lanza

Do I really look like that?

Do I really sound like that?

Am I really so self-opinionated?

The alternative to both extremes is the middle point. Be critic with yourself, but also acknowledge your positives. Accept your faults and try to improve. DonĀ“t forget your good points and be kind and patient with yourself.
Far more realistic and healthy.

The problem is that you are saying something of you in public and without any context as a framework that could help to add nuances.
Are you the same person at job than with friends, or doing a hobby??

It seems to me that people think that saying nice things about themselves can be looked down, while self- deprecating is more accepted.
Maybe, lacerating oneself seems to have some kind of the glamurous perfume of those losers that so well fit in literaty fiction.

Either all that, or the level of self-esteem is really down around here. Which I find a bit un-realistic.

OK Maria,

Isn't me impeccably dressed?
Isn't he well spoken, with a clear, true voice - not indulging in platitudes or bad language.
Me's modest and a good listener

Just as true as my post above (#27), depending on the company I'm in or whether I've had breakfast yet.

I think I'd like to avoid such introspection.

If you are a depressive type, too much introspection can make things worse, I've seen it in my family and I avoid that road as much as I can.

Don't you think country of birth/upbringing has something to do with it? Slightly? Or maybe age perhaps. Being English, I seem to feel we were brought up, in my generation at least, to not blow one's own trumpet. I remember having to be actively coached to acknowledge my talents and good points during my career.

Alright, then I won't be modest: It would be awesome to meet myself. We'd have so much in common! But here's a question no one has yet posed, what if I met a female version of myself? After getting over the initial strangeness of it, would I perhaps have deeply conflicting thoughts about her?

That is such a weird suggestion! I probably don't dispute that there may be an infinite number of possible alternate universes in which similar but not identical 'me' exist. I'd never contemplated that any might not be female. How odd that I just assumed that.

I could never imagine myself as a man. My brain goes numb at the thought of it.

smiley - offtopic If you want to see things that have been written between < and > then click on preferences and your skin of choice should appear when you choose [update] at the bottom.

If you log out - then you will default back into Pliny when you next sign in, so either bookmark your personal space in whatever skin you prefer, or just click back on preferences if needed.

Just so everyone understands what we're talking about, Pliny dislikes things written between < and > if there is no space between the angle brackets and the phrase, and so removes them. We're aware of this hiccup, and no doubt there will be a fix as soon as possible.smiley - offtopic

Hee hee, you know what, I think if I met myself I'd get on with myself initally and we'd be the raucus ones over there giggling at each other and making dirty jokes and hysterically laughing.

In all honesty though, we tend to be irritated by things in others that we ourselves are guilty of. We'd never get in touch again despite meaning to and we'd annoy each other equally about the same things. We'd swing wildly between admiring and disapproving of ourselves, be REALLY annoyed that neither takes the others' advice and eventually we'd go our separate ways.

Not convinced there's enough world for two of me, either.

And if I was a man, I'd almost definitely fall in love with myself. I'd be seriously cool. smiley - winkeye

I do genuinely think that, if I met myself* I would like him, although it would take a proper social situation with mutual friends and/or interests pre-selecting the crowd. I have no time whatsoever for complete strangers.

Incidentally, given the nature of the Y chromosome, just doing an X/Y swap would not result in a gender-flipped copy. It would probably fit the scenario better to imagine someone converging to your outward characteristics, but from a different origin.

* I am presuming that this scenario includes not instantly recognizing that you are meeting yourself. That would change the dynamic: for a start, I would probably be too concerned about how it happened to take any time for the actual effect.
