I can kinda understand extracting the data is the individual is in custody - that's just speeding up a process that is already done, but takes a while.
However, retaining that data for an extended period of time after a person is released without charge surely contravenes the Data Protection Act.

I thought this was their financial model. The government reduces funding, so they supplement this by selling personal data to News International.

Please tell me that's a joke! Not that I will be affected, as I rarely set foot in Great Britain. Still, in times of turmoil personal liberties usually start to disintegrate little by little. We've had a little problem with that [cough!] in the U.S. as well.
