On the Grauniad and Indy comment sections there are a fair few posters who have The Peterloo Massacre in one form or another as their avatar.
Why would this be? Have I missed something?

I think it's about the right to protest without the fear of violent retribution from the forces of "law and order".

that's what I was thinking but I was wondering if there was some kind of "movement" or organisation or something.

The Manchester Guardian was founded in response to the massacre and the repressive laws that followed it, the Indy wishes it was the Guardian

The people massacred were part of a huge crowd demonstrating for parlimentary reform and had similar aims to the Chartists

ah now it makes sense. It's only in the Guardian comments.
I know / knew about the Peterloo massacre but I didn't know about the connection to The Guardian.
Now I know. Thanks.
