Should people be allowed to dress in illegal costumes?

"if you are and MP and plot to get your mate wearing a Nazi uniform in France because it will be offensive then you do rather deserve everything that happens to you"
And there, if I'm not mistaken, we can leave it. That sums it up, entirely, succinctly and completely. And I'll eat a whole raw gherkin if anyone comes up with a single thing relevant to this story that isn't covered by that observation.
Thank you, Sol, and well done. I mean that most sincerely.

What about if you are an MP, a senior MP at that, and you've actually dressed up as a Nazi? Is that bad?

Oh my!
Some wriggle room, surely? Balls wasn't actually a senior MP when he dressed as a Nazi. 'I was a complete dick back then' might be seen to count for something?

Plus it was 25 years ago.
We let most murderers out of prison long before that length of time has passed.

Excellent, I can say it's no-ones business without looking like a partisan hypocrite.
People are idiots at university: the Prime Minister, Chancellor and Mayor of London can all vouch for that.

Would you dress up your kid as Adolf Hitler and send him off to the school fancy dress party? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-11111456

An old Uni housemate of mine related to me a story of when he went to a fancy dress do at his school and his mate dressed as Herr Flick (essentially, you know the clobber) and went around another mates house to get him before they all went along together. This second mate's grandmother answered the door - apparently she was an Aushchwitz survivor...
...oops.
