If I have an appliance from the UK can it be converted to be used in the US

Depending on what it is, a lot of our (Canadian) smaller appliances and devices are built with a voltage switch. Otherwise, you can find adapters and the like. I have such a combination yet from when Venus visited us, so that she could re-charge her camera batteries. (That device saw a LOT of use)

Further to that, if you are in the US ... RadioShack, Circuit City, Future Shop and other such places have them. Make sure they have a transformer to meet the electrical demand of the appliance

It's the frequency that you have to be wary of. 50Hz (Hertz) equipment operated at 60Hz will run hotter and eventually burn out. also the speed will be higher around 1.2 times. its ok for equipment with multi voltage/frequency power packs like laptops but kitchen equipment etc. will have problems.
