When is a record 'old'?

On radio2, we are asked to send in our requests for golden oldies. At what point does a record become a golden oldie? Obviously this is open to interpretation, but what's your choice?

I realised I am officilly a relic of a past era when Absolute radio started playing a 90s hour. What I think of as 'my' music now needs a dedicted hour. Oy.

When it's played as background music at the supermarket. This applies to a lot of music I used to dance to in seedy nightclubs.

When it gets played on radio 2

I think it was called the BBC Light programme when I was a kid.

My guess is that the date not only varies between different people, but also between different tunes; some songs feel like they get old before others.

Depressingly true during the daytime, but not so true of the evening.

Johnny P has a point there. No-one buys records these days. Or tapes. Or any physical storage medium, it seems. All the young people downloaded their music and it gets transferred automagically to their media player of choice.

Sad to say, but yes. Records, by definition, must be old. smiley - blue

Well the first time I felt old was when I worked with a graduate who was born after The Pistols. Shed heard of them...they were one of those old bands like The Beatles.

Ah...they dont write tunes like that any more. I mean it, maaaan.

Is it anything over 3 minutes long? My daughter refuses to believe me when I tell her about Yes, or Emerson Lake and Palmer.

My first reaction was that if it's a record, it's "old", too, but thankfully a number of record labels are still putting out new releases (not just reissues) on vinyl. In fact, at least two local (Chicago-based) labels issue new releases on vinyl only. smiley - biggrin I haven't bought a new release on CD in 5-6 years.

Most of the local radio stations, when they play their oldies or retro hours, play anything about 20 years old or older. I remember one time when I was in my mid-twenties, I caught a "retro" hour where they played a number of songs from my senior prom. Some of those songs were only 7-8 years old. smiley - cross

>No-one buys records these days<

I have a couple of vinyl EP's by Seth Lakeman from a couple of year back and one by The Answer and , yes, I still have the 'technology' to 'em.

I also by actual CD's, lots of 'em.

My son loves our vinyl collection and often plays them even though most of them are duplicated on CD. He loves opening the gatefold sleeves of the Iron Maiden ones.

I've even got smiley - shhh videos of performances by Prince, Maiden, Anthrax, and loads more (my favourite is my Cinderella one from the Night Songs tour smiley - senior)

Loads of the stuff we have could and should be considered old but, then, I'm 45 and some of the stuff I have even older than me.

For me, a 'golden oldie' is any record released prior to when I stopped watching Top Of The Pops, which is probably about 1983. smiley - biggrin

And old record is something my parents would know and I wouldn't, pre 1960s.

>>I was going to start a thread in Ask the other day: Journey or Supertramp?

smiley - biggrin I have two Supertramp stories...

One of them was from my wifes home town. When she was about fourteen, word spread round one time that he was back home visiting his mum. So her mum kept her in in case she ran away to be a groupie smiley - rofl For Supertramp!!!!smiley - roflsmiley - roflsmiley - rofl

The other one - the friend of a friend was in a rather successful student-oriented band in the 80s (I shant name them*). They were on tour and in Belgium Supertramp discovered they were in the same hotel and invited them to dinner. They declined...~For artistic reasons~.

Which is logical. smiley - winkeye
