I find concentrating on the word "sleep" helps, repeating it over in your head, but in rythm to your heartbeat, then slowing down a little as this helps slow your heart rate. Somebody told me it was self hypnosis, I don't really care as long as I get some kip!

Learn a piece of lovely poetry and recite it to yourself. As you get more familiar with it it will be come an automatic process, and as your body and mind get into a routine they will recognise it as the Sleeptime Signal.
Don't try it with music lyrics though...
Sounds a bit hippy, but it works

Lavender essential oil. A drop or two on each corner of your pillow and it will knock out an elephant.
You get really deep and dreamless sleep too.

Lavender oil will knock an elephant out? Must get some as we have too many of them wandering around here at the moment.

Just find the most boring piece of literature that you have never managed to finish because it was so boring, then when you go to bed read it.I guarantee that you will never finish it.

I suffer from terrible insomnia. I have found the best way to get to sleep is to do some very energetic exercise just before going to bed, it makes your body automatically relax. If you wake in the night and can't get back to sleep it is generally because your mind has become very active, the best way to stop churning things over in your mind is to switch the radio on very quietly so you can just hear it. I would recommend Radio 4, which has the World Service between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., News and then the Today programme from 6 a.m. You will find that the gentle talking stops you turning things over in you head and you drop off to sleep.
It works for me and I have become an expert of the World's current affairs as well as farming and the shipping forecast!!

Some tips on getting sleep:
Go to bed early, even if you don't get to sleep. Allow yourself about 7 - 8 hours in bed.
Go to bed at a regular time and get up early at a regular time every day.
Exercise vigorously during the day. The sleep you get from being physically tired is the best sort.
If you drink coffee, don't take it just before you go to bed. Drink a small amount of alcohol instead. This has the opposite effect to caffeine.
Don't worry about it. Worrying about staying awake keeps you from sleeping. If you are lying awake in your bed doing nothing, you are still getting rest, although it is not as good as being asleep.

And if you *do* find yourself unable to sleep, you might as well accept it, get up for a little while and do something or read something, and then try again a little later. Much more effective than just lying in bed fretting that you've only got so many hours before you have to get up.

Thanks for all he tips about getting some kippo. My insomnia comes and goes, I find that Yoga is quite good, and stopping drinking industrial ammounts of filtered coffee. I find that i might wake up in the middle of the night thinking about some dirty local political move ive encountered and it narks me that someone has insulted my intelligence. i try to repress these thoughts but cant...any tips on how to forget about the stress of the day.

Work nights. The sleep after a nightshift is the best I have ever had.

Well then buy a special herb tea that is designed to aid sleep-there are several available from any health food shop and they do work.I discovered them when I was heavily pregnant and didn't want to take drugs for my insomnia.

The two most widely used methods, used when you are having trouble getting to sleep are:
1) TV. Most TV is so boring it could be used to put a hyperactive child to sleep.
2) Sex. A good roll in the hay is very relaxing (after the fact), and there are hormones released into the body after the orgasm that aid sleep (the reason some men roll over and go sleep right after sex).
