I would say neither and go for Harrison instead. He kept the band together when the others were trying to tear it apart in the late sixties, and was responsible for many, possibly a majority, of their better later songs. 'Here Comes the Sun' is just the most obvious example. The reason he didn't contribute many songs to the earlier LPs is, not because he didn't have any, but because fab Macca and Lennon wouldn't let him. It took the break-up of their hegemony (sp?) to bring out the best in the 'Quiet Beatle'...

It is difficult to separate Lennon and McCartney because their Beatles work was always credited to the two of them. Listening to their later solo work reveals that Lennon was the man with the good words, while McCartney wrote the good tunes. Undoubtedly, it was the tunes which got the Beatles to the number one position. The words of "Love Me Do, You Know I Love You" are no different from other music of the day. But having captured the number one spot, it was probably Lennon's strange images and biting wit that kept the Beatles ahead of the crowd.
Most people would accept that Imagine, by John Lennon, is a much better song than Mull of Kintyre, by Paul McCartney, but it was Mull of Kintyre which sold 2 million copies and was one of the most successful singles ever.

oh! oh! oh!
and... don't forget that dreadful sitar-y thing on Sgt Pepper, Lear. That was Harrison's fault (I think).

In defense of McCartney
Yesterday and Hey Jude
As I understand it - whomsoever wrote the majority of a song/thought it up first got to sing it.

I think blaming Lennon for Yoko Ono is possibly a bit much. She wasn't his "fault". Was she?
Anyway, it's not that I don't like McCartney. I just like Lennon more - it's perfectly possible that if he hadn't been killed he'd have come up with something as bad as the froggy thing.

He gave her more publicity than she would ever have got otherwise.
SO basically I'm saying he inflicted her upon the world, not gave birth to her.
My real point was Macca wrote Hey Jude - possibly the best beatles track but that's just my opinion.
I actually have no strong feelings either way. Everybody always says that Lennon was the real talent of the duo but I just want to defend Paul McCartney that's all

I thought Lennon wrote Hey Jude for his sun Julian. Am I mistaken?

I may well be mistaken - - I was simply going by the whoever wrote the majority of the song sang it and Paul sings Hey Jude.
If I'm wrong then fair-de-doo-dee - John wins for me too
