I'm not a Brit, but in New Zealand the general rule is that if the road has no footpath then you walk on the side facing the traffic. That way you can see if a car is going to hit you smiley - winkeye

If there is a foot path, can't you walk on which ever side you want?

Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side smiley - winkeye

I'm with Kea here: if there's no footpath, better walk on the side you can face the traffic.

Kea is completely right. The side that faces the oncoming traffic is the safest side if there is no footpath/pavement/sidewalk.

Facing the oncoming traffic is what I was always told. Try to keep within the yellow lines if there's no footpath. If there are no yellow lines, use your initiative.

which roughly means that, even though you drive left, you walk right (for safety reasons)and that if its not possible you use your initiative?

It's about the same as here (in the Netherlands) but what about foodpath...the same problem...

In NZ people are meant to walk on the left side of the footpath, hallway, stairs etc when passing each other. Some people don't seem to realise this smiley - crosssmiley - winkeye

In the UK and Ireland, there is no convention for walking along the pavement/footpath/sidewalk, or walking down corridors or pedestrian streets. You just go wherever you feel like, and swap sides if you feel like it.

On escalators, especially on the underground, we Londoners stand on the right. This is so that people in a hurry can walk either up or down on the left, whilst people of a more relaxed disposition can stand and be taken to their destination at a more sedate pace.

Some visitors to London seem to have difficulty understanding this, so London Underground helpfully put signs up on the escalators saying "Please stand on the right", sometimes with a helpful picture for those who don't read English.

Doesn't seem to make much difference, though... smiley - erm

I always walk on the sunny side as people constantly seem to underestimate the power and the danger of the dark side.

While it is true that you should walk facing oncoming traffic, you should also switch to teh other side when approaching a sharp bend, as traffic has sod-all chance of seeing you otherwise.
