UK Petrol Crisis
I'm not really here Posted Sep 13, 2000
They've changed the pipes in my area to "syphon". You go in, think you're topping up, and they are stealing your fuel!
At least, that's what it seems like.

I wonder what the mature Conservative view is on who's to blame?
a) Horrible oil companies holding the country to ransom
b) Nasty tanker drivers refusing to cross non-picket-lines
c) Callous truck drivers blockading fuel depots
d) Evil Labour government carrying on with exactly the same policies the Conservatives implemented and operated for a decade or more

One thing that's becoming clear (to me at least), is that we need more crises and shortages

Orinocco (R51290) Posted Sep 13, 2000
Actually, there's a shortage of shortages too !

Well you won't get an argument from me on that one, but it would be interesting to know why you felt that way!

It seems that only crisis or shortage shakes the British out of their rampant apathy

Too many spoilt brats in this country. The 'I am alright jack' philosophy. And there is nothing like a bit of hardship to build empathy. Realise that you are not the center of the universe. Make you realise that these things are not unlimited, on demand. Give you an idea what 90% of the worlds population has to go through. Many many reasons.

And for panic buying, of course.
It just goes to show the fragility of running businesses on a just-in-time basis, however fashionable it may be as a management strategy.
I guess when it results in lower inventories, and some small saving for the business, the managers take the credit, and when stocks run out due to some logistical problem or other, they can always blame the transport companies or someone else as usual.

UK Petrol Crisis and bus strike
Deano (Keeper of lemonade) Posted Sep 13, 2000
Here here! I completely agree. People who use four wheel drives as fashion accessories are one of my pet hates. For crying out loud buy a Jag or a Merc if you want to flash your money around but stop driving round in cars that eat up about ten miles to the gallon of petrol because my Dad's rapidly running out as you pump it into your car and I somehow have to get to university this weekend. And, for all those dumb people with two and three cars parked on their drive who supported the bus strike in the North West EAT YOUR WORDS! It's all back fired now hasn't it? For all those rich people who cried about something that didn't affect them 'you managed to punish all the public transport users in the first place and now that the buses are on strike and there's no petrol, you've punished yourselves'. Next time think about others before you open your big mouths.
