UK Petrol Crisis

Anyone who thinks they will be 'stuffed' if they run out of bread and milk ought to do a months voluntary work in Africa and seriously get a realistic perspective on life. Entire countries live permanently on grain and water and yet, when we think we might be temporarliy deprived of all lifes luxuries, we go to pieces. Whether one approves or disapproves of the blockades, going without ones tea and toast in the morning is hardly a life or death issue!! I appreciate that there are some people with special diets/needs etc, but the current situation is no different from the chaos that ensues when the Country has a heavy fall of snow.

$1 Aus is about 40 pence a litre. We're paying more than twice that (well, we would be if there was any petrol to buy at the moment).

Crescent Posted Sep 13, 2000
Bran - it is about £0.85 per litre, I do not know the exchange rate, off the top of my head. Slug - I know, and you wonder where the 'whinging pomme' comes from.....

If we didn't have something to whinge about, we wouldn't be 'whinging poms', would we?

Thanks One and All. At a price of 0.85 pence per litre, and an exchange of 0.38 pence for one of our AUS$ .... that comes to about AUS$2.20 per litre ... CH-CHING. OH MY GOD!! No wonder you are all a bit testy about this. To reiterate ... we pay about AUS$1.00, which has most of us miffed. I hope that you folks see some relief soon.
Best wishes
Bran

Hi Bran!
Get some relief???
We should be so lucky with the pig-headed government we have!!
They will probably wait a couple of days, and then press the military into service to releive the situation for them, and expect us to be grateful!!
Roll on the next General Election..........We will show them how grateful we are!!!!

Well with the money they've got, everyone will be greatful for the direct tax cuts the government will give everyone just before the election.

There they go, stealing the conservative policies again. Still, you can't say they didn't learn anything while in opposition
*someone who remembers 20 years ago, when VAT was at the split 8%/12.5% rate, and applied to fewer things than it does now*

They will drive past the picket lines, direct to the petrol storage facilities, at gunpoint if neccessary!

It would have to be something like that - I'm sure stock piles have been run down in recent years to save money
