A Conversation for Ask h2g2
Things you just found out but should have known a long time ago...

>>Blows the dust off this old thread<<
Seriously, I had to scroll back past 850 posts to find this place. Between the MOD, Barlesque, the disposal and resurrection of h2g2 and NaJoPoMo to boot, there's been quite a lot of talking going on around here.
Anyway, after all that I can't be bothered to go back through the backlog here to see if this has been mentioned or not, but I've just discovered something germane to this conversation.
If you hold the shift key, clicking on a scroll bar will take you directly to that point along it.
It's not much, I know, but I'm finding it handy.
OK... you can go back to sleep now, forgotten thread.

Seriously?
try just typing something like things you just found out and h2g2 into google
you'll get something like this: http://www.google.com/search?q=things+you+just+found+out+h2g2&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a
Then if you click on the site at the top you'll save a lot of scrolling.
I would have thought that should have been known long ago.

BTW, h2g2's search is working pretty well again. (They turned it back on in the forums).

A few months ago, we switched to Outlook at w*rk, and I've discovered some useful functions that I've been asked to share, and to revive this thread, so here goes.
But first, a Windows tip. Have you ever suddenly found that you've somehow changed your keyboard setup?
Well, that's because there's a (rather stupid, imo, since it's so easy to hit by mistake) shortcut:
Shift+Alt or Shift+AltGr
All you need to do to switch it back to the normal setup is type the same combination again. Note: Shift must be pressed before Alt/AltGr.

Outlook 2007 tip no. 1:
Do you often find yourself typing the same kind of replies time and time again? With exactly the same wording each time? (I'm the administrator of our travel expenses's system, so I do that a lot).
Create a new mail, type in the text, mark it.
Click on the Insert tab and Quick Parts, choose Save Selection to Quick Part Gallery.
Name: pick something easy to remember and click OK, for example rgds
Next time you create a mail, type the 2-3 first letters of the name (depending on how unique the name is compared with your other quick parts) and hit F3.
Tadaaaaa!

Outlook 2007 tip no. 2:
How to easily create an Appointment in your Calendar from a mail in your inbox.
In the inbox column, left click the mail and drag and drop it on the Calendar tab in the lower left corner of Outlook (if you're using the default layout).
Set the date/time and subject, click Save & Close (upper left).
This will create a copy of the mail in your Calendar, and if you double click the Appointment, it picks up the mail, including attachments. This works even if you've deleted the mail from your inbox.

I've been sending the same email at least once a week for a couple of years (with only some numbers as a variable). Outlook tip 1 is going to be very handy for me. Thanks.

One of my colleagues, who's husband is Turkish, appreciated it too since her last name has no less than three ΓΌ in it, saves her some typing time...

It worked.
Granted, the email in question is quite terse and doesn't really justify the need for such a short cut, but I just enjoy learning and knowing such things for when they do.

Well, I've given mine such unique names that I only need to type the first two letters and then F3 - so any common phrase that involves typing more than three letters becomes a quickie.

Aaaand, yet another windows navigation lesson.
If you MIDDLE click on a hypertext link, i.e. press down on the scroll wheel, the link will open in a new tab.

Depends on the mouse. I tried it when I read it this morning at home, but the scroller wheel doesn't move up and down, only round.
Here at work I can do it. What else can you do with a middle click?

Yeah, I love that one. I was thinking about it just the other day as I'm about to have to edit the form email I made after reading that last year. (I have to change AS16 to AS17 referring to which Apollo mission I'm currently working on. )
