Salad Cream

Finally somone talking sense and appreciates the finer things in life. Mayonaisse quite simply does not ever come close to the taste sensation that is Salad cream. Plus for all you people who put mayonaisse on chips, MOVE TO FRANCE. Salad cream / Tomato sauce is the british way to serve the humble chip (with salt & vinegar of course). What next I say, before we know it the chip butty will be reduced to a pomme frite croissant! No more I say!

T'is me again, a very good point, there is one little point that I would like to make about chips, you failed to mention the most wonderful of chip sauces of them all, even though it's origin's are Asian. This of course is Curry Sauce, it is in fact a British product based on the Indian Curry but the Indians never thought of puting curry sauce on chips did they? So in my eyes it is totally British, just like salad cream and not like evil "mayo" (sorry but I can't spell the whole word, it brings hate into my blood stream and I end up breaking something, usually the keyboard.)

A very good point, made with a passion that could only come from an ambassador of salad cream. And you are right about chip shop curry sauce. Imagine a chip butty filled to the brim with freshly cooked chips covered with curry sauce, now that's what I call proper food. You can take your chicken poach in white port on a bed of perfumed vegetables and you can stick'em somewhere painful. Give me chips, sausages (battered), curry sauce & of course salad cream.

Actually, Tomato Ketchup is an Asian sauce too. Can't remember what the story behind it is though. SOmething to do with Ketjap or something, which is a sauce in India. Probably.

Kechup: Chinese (Amoy) for brine of fish according to my handy dictionary
(presumably either this is the lesser known oriental tomato fish or its meaning has drifted over time ))

No sign of Indian origin or derivation though wouldn't surprise me..
Hobson-Jobson does however inform me that Kedgeree apart from being a Hindi rice dish is also a village and police station on the low lands near the mouth of the Hoogly
(Possibly best improved with either Mayo or Salad Cream)

Did I say Indian? Deary me, I meant Chinese!
*wonders whether he got out of that one without egg on face*
What Origin?
Purple Moose Posted Sep 14, 2000
So, of what I can see ketchup is either Indian or from the lesser known tomato ketchup fish. All I know is that Salad Cream is definatly British and if anyone disagrees I shall probably crawl into the corner and sulk for the rest of the day.
(This is of course if anyone can be bothered to argue.)
What Origin?

I always thought it was brown sauce that originated in India, but never mind. Has anyone else tried salad cream on scrambled egg (must be served in a barm cake)?
confused
Purple Moose Posted Sep 19, 2000
Ok, now I'm completely confused! Please could some one tell me what sauce comes from where before my head explodes!

Heinz axed its Salad Cream origianlly because they thought nobody liked it (except the elderly and children, and market research doesn't aim foodstuffs at those groups). However, due to the public outcry they brought it back with a blimmin price hike. The cheek!

I was wondering
1) How would the majority of tv stations run if it wasn't for the commercials as it is the major (sometimes only)source of income. the same also applies to radio, newspapers and magazines.
2) How can anyone dislike salad cream. Are you human?

Zak T Duck Posted Sep 19, 2000
There is talk that in about five years time the BBC will have to show commecials to fund itself, as the stupid British Government want the full TV licence money for themselves as another form of taxation.
Idon't know how people can dislike salad cream. It is mayonnaise that is vomit inducing drivel.

jk - perhaps you should have spell checked your rant before posting it.
I would like to point out (as one who works for a terrestrial television station) commercials are essential for the channel's revenue, as is programme sponsorship. The licence fee enforced by the BBC is their way of creating revenue. I personally would like to see the channel funded by the big companies through advertising than from the pockets of the public.
If you don’t like commercials watch the BBC or switch off altogether!

Lipsbury Pinfold (Part-time Timelord) Posted Sep 20, 2000
Salad evidently comes from the latin female form of salt and creme comes from the latin for blending or mixing.
So presumably salad cream was originally a complimentary or insulting phrase used to refer to confused female sailors from Rome
(licence fees are an intrinsic part of being British. People want to pay for the privilege of being told what they should watch. Sometimes something good comes out of it and the rest of the tame you have the right to moan about the way your money has been spent)

Yes, but when the BBC is force dto show adverts in a few years time, everyone is going to be miffed at why they're still paying over £100 a year.
I tell you, this country's Government is too crafty for its own good.

If only they were 'kraft' y - then you could make cheese sandwiches with them and eat them with salad cream

And they'd be Calci-Yummy.
Only they're not, no processed cheese is. It's almost as bad as mayonnaise
