Films with sad endings

I prefer films with sad endings. M'lady set me a challenge: for every film I can name with a sad ending she would name three films with happy endings. So far I've got:
Elephant Man
American Werewolf in London
Thelma and Louise
The Doors
Any more?
Do other folk agree with me that sad endings are more interesting?

I suppose Shawshank Redemption is sort of happy/sad.

The Plague Dogs. This is an interesting one, because in my opinion, the major flaw in the book was the stupid happy ending tacked onto a miserable book. They changed that in the film and made it into a sad ending.

and I agree, a sad ending is often either a. more intersting or b. unexpected.
here's a few more;
Leon (The Professional), Das Boot (the boat), the Green Mile, E.T, Joan of Arc, Romeo and Juliet (and loads of other Shakespeare movies like Hamlet and Macbeth amd Henry V), the House of Sand and Fog and to top it all off Old Yella.

Donnie Darko. Save the world, and the life of the one you love by killing yourself in the past.

Bittersweet endings are more comman than you think, when you think about it
Withnail and I - Sad because Marwood leaves Withnail on his own, but happy beacuse he's going on to better things.
Forrest Gump - Sad because his love dies, but happy cos he has a little Forrest to look after
Star Wars Trilogy - Sad because Lukes dad is dead but happy because the evil empire has been overthrown
well actually thats only 3 that i can think of tere, and the last one was really pushing it, so maybe they are not that common after all.
And as for Titanic having a sad ending, nope, the whole thing is just SAD. Ihatesthatfilmwithapassionasitsucksthepoopfromadeddogsbum

You should see it LowdWolfden, it's a good film. BBC2 are showing Donnie Darko as part of their Summer of Film season.

Yeah, the ending of Donnie Darko really affected me as well - it leaves you with a strange sort of mix of happy and sad... I went out to buy a pint of milk shortly afterwards, and it felt like that kind of mental 'hard shell' you put around yourself to shield you from the outside world had been stripped away - suddenly I felt like I was really feeling things, feeling very open to the world, wanting to somehow reach out and touch people, to make a difference.
In the event, I smiled at a few people on Green Lanes and had a little conversation with the woman in the off-licence, and went back to my housemates and had a cuppa
