A Super Furry Animal

Nick Roeg's "Insignificance". All this talk of Walkabout (his first (?) film) reminded me of it.

Also, strangely...The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover. Although the protagonist achieves a satisfactory ending of sorts, it's still sad.

Michael Nyman's music to The Cook etc, seems to makes the film a lot better than it really is.

'Born Free'

Bittersweet, poignant.

smiley - brave

Sad might make for more intresting endings than happy, but leaving the viewer with mixed emotions beats either?

'Born Free; = sentimental tosh, in my book

'Gorillas in the Mist', now that's more like it...........smiley - laugh

Well, Born Free (1969) the acting was "sentimentall tosh" true. As for 'Living Free' (1972) - Thought it was boring then, plain crap in later life. A sequel the world could have lived without; and no it' didn't make me feel any better about Elsa's lot in life.

It was the ending the ending though, no film since has done that. Sure there are sad films...

At the weekend the BBC showed 'Hearts In Atlantis' (2001) Staring Anthony Hopkins. Sad at the end, but I didn't care, he should have written; and did they really think the same actress in a wig would work?

Must be something happened to me between 1969 and 1972 that made me mean, or was it later in life. smiley - erm

Another for the list: 'A Few Good Men.' Sad, somebody died, and sad the truth of what they should have done to protect that person only came to mind at that point.

No!

Donnie Darko has a happy ending.

He finally figures it all out, that's why he laughs.

He has finally found the timeline in which all who are dear to him live.

(well that was my interpretation)

Shuffles off into a corner.............

But really, I honestly think that it is a happy ending.

Cheers,

Gsmiley - cool

"The sixties film, 'Walkabout'. Totally beautiful and tragic."

Agreed. A work of art that film is.

Donnie Darko. I watched that last night too. Not quite sure to make of it all though!

Yes, I saw it too last night, although I don't agree that it has a happy ending Gaderene, your interpretation probable refects your optomistic personality, me, I'm a half empty glass. The way I see it is that the whole film is Donnie's premonition of his own death, and so everything that happens throughout the film is erased by his death. I agree, he could be having a great time in another time line, but the scene at the end where the girl he will never meet waves to his mother, is unbearably sad.

I shouldn't think that anything said will spoil your enjoyment of the movie. There's enough ambiguous stuff going on to give you plenty to think about.
