Okay, there aren't any monkey's involved, I just wanted attention so that someone could answer my question.
I use Windows 98 SE (second edition) and I connect to the internet using a modem. I usually use IE5 to view webpages, but whenever I close every active IE window it asks me if I would like to disconnect from the internet. It is really annoying. I have been putting up with it for a while and trying to find someway to turn it off in menus but just can't.
My Question: Can I make it stop doing that? And if I can, how?

Yes you can. Go to the "View" menu and go down to "Internet Options." It should be one of the Submenus under one of the tabs. If that doesn't work, go download Netscape.smiley - winkeye (joke)
If this doesn't work tell me, I got other options.

Actually Internet Options is under Tools. And I already checked it, but I did check again and I saw nothing that would alter it, atleast not anything that wasn't hidden in some triple-sub-panel (I tried looked under most of the buttons that made sense, like connection properties, and "advanced").
Please tell me the other area you think it may be in.

I think I've got it...

tools->internet options->connections->settings->advanced

There's a box which says 'disconnect when connection may no longer be needed'. Untick it, and all should be well...

Incidentally, you'd be much better off giving your question an appropriate title... if people can see immediately what you're asking about, you're more likely to get a useful answer.

It is already unchecked. Thanks for the tip on phrasing questions though. Any more idea?

Well, this is quite a drastic measure, but you could try choosing 'never dial a connection' under tools->internet options->connections.

This'll mean you have to dial up to the next yourself (ie. clicking on the icon in dial-up networking, or using a shortcut to it), but you're guaranteed not to have IE ask you if you want to log off.

I was suspicious that this wouldn't work right away because I have connected using the dial-up networking icon in my computer several times. And I was unfortunately right. I am thinking that the answer could lie somewhere in windows control panels (though I've checked many times) rather than IE. Or it could still be IE, but being that they are integrated it doesn't make much difference.

Hmmm. Distinctly odd.

I notice that you said it asks you ever time you close an active window, also... I'm fairly sure that's not normal behavior... it should only really ask you when you close the last window.

It seems possible that reinstalling IE would be of some use... it's the next thing I'd try, anyway, because I'm fairly sure there aren't any more convenient boxes to untick which could do the job...

Perhaps I didn't explain it right, but no, it doesn't ask me if I want to disconnect every time I close a window. Every time I close every IE window (that is surfing the internet) it asks me. It is annoying because sometimes I want to use an internet program and I close the IE windows I was using to surf, but before I can start the program I have to wait 10 or so seconds for this popup to come up so that it doesn't pop up while I am running a program. Also, I recently upgraded IE with the Service Pack thing from the Windows Update page (and it basically had me download IE all over again, and the problem did happen before the upgrade, and has happened ever since I started connecting on this computer). So this doesn't happen with anyone else?

Hmmmm. That sounds more like normal behavior... but it definitely ought to be preventable by one of the options I've described...

Have you got multiple dial-up connections? If so, make sure you've unchecked the 'disconnect if connection may no longer be needed' box for all of 'em...

Other than that, well, I'm running out of ideas.

I have two connections, I checked them both and neither had that box checked. Well, I think that we gave it our best shot, and that it is just some windows feature that we have been unable to turn off. i can live with it, I just thought I would give the ask h2g2 forum users a crack at it. If you get any more ideas then keep replying, but don't waste too much time on the problem.
