Edward the Bonobo - Gone.

A founder of the BBC. He believed that the BBC should have a public duty 'To educate, inform and entertain'. These are known as 'Reithian values'. Theoretically, these are still the BBC's core values.

Stealth "Jack" Azathoth

His maxim for the BBC of inform, educate and entertain pretty much sum up what hootoo is all about.

For extra QI points. He was a Nazi sympathiser.

Neither did I, without checking.
I did know that he resigned from the Beeb under pressure from Chamberlain, though, ie before WWII. That probably limited his ability to buy things for Auntie almost as much as being dead.
I guess he could still have bought h2g2 in the 1930s, though. He was a pretty far-sighted bloke by all accounts.

mistakenly thought you meant google then and was thinking - 'What? Pinniped is Professor Jonathan Spence? An emminent historian? But why does he think his Reith lecture was silly?'

until I came back and reread what you had actually posted... smiley - doh

Well, yeah, though I am Professor Jonathan Spence as well, of course. To some degree. Sort of.
