Moving rivers gather no bicycles Started conversation May 6, 2005
So I have found, that when I clean up the sink, the shelves, the cupboard under the sink, the draining board, and all things pertaining to the 'helpful friends' corner of my eremite cave, all the backlog of post, phone-calls (yes some caves do have phones), visits, etc from one's 'friends' all arrive (rather like a No.68 bus after an hour's wait). Anyone else found this, or other 'Feng Shui' phenomena (or is it phenomenum?)

Well since we never clean
"... the sink, the shelves, the cupboard under the sink, the draining board, and all things pertaining to the 'helpful friends' corner of my eremite cave, ..."
all at the same time or on the sameday, we have not encounter such a situation. On the other hand I have notice that whenever we do clean the entire carpet at the same time, someone will enter with 'muddy' shoes.

2legs - Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side... Posted May 6, 2005
I have no idea of what those places would be, and no idea why I'd be under the impression that the layout of furnature in the hosue would have any other effect than making the place look, or 'feel' different as a room

And then, yet another example - I cleared out the cool 'cave' under the stairs and within hours I had a phone call from someone I hadn't heard from in at least 2 years...and that was from clearing up the 'ancients - heritage' area...

yuNobody, I think that's called Sod's Law. Among other things. (Am I allowed to say that without *?)

A Chinese flatmate once told me that the way I had my bed placed in my bedroom allowed for demons to come in and disturb my sleep. And I thought, um, wtf???

So, did you have your back towards the door? Also, apparently, you are not supposed to have your bed with your feet pointing directly in line with the doorway, OR have your bed that is behind an opening door, i.e. the incoming person is hidden from you until they are well into the room (spooky) AND you are not supposed to sleep in a bed which has a nearby mirror (wardrobe door etc) which allows you to accidentally see yourself reflected if you wake unexpectedly in the night. I live in a cave and I feel alright about all this...

Well, this was a few years ago. The door opened onto the side of the bed (could this be counted as being behind the door?) - the door being opposite the only long wall that a bed could be placed along.
My present bedroom has the door opening at the foot of my bed - in the opposite direction to where the bed is. So I would not only see any demons straight away but I have my guard cat, Sunny, who (like the dog that he is) always sleeps at the foot of the bed watching the hallway. Am I safe?
Meanwhile, no mirrors in my bedroom - are you nuts? I think the sight of me getting out of bed in the morning would be enough to scare even the most stout-hearted soul . . .

No, the problem with a bed which has your feet pointing towards an open door (when its open that is) is not good because that was traditionally how the coffin was taken out, feet first, from the 'lying in state' person who traditionally was laid out on his/her bed prior to going down the staircase in his/her coffin. I think it also applies to windows which is perhaps why it has been a fashion fad to have one's bed head underneath the window (which I think looks daft.) Also cats are notorious for sleeping on 'bad spots' so it might be your feet (nothing personal you understand) or the fact that it is the bad vibes place - an end of the bed facing the door...

All I notice is a huge relief that my bad concience (spelling?) of not having cleared the attic/closet/kitchen counters is gone once I have actually cleared those places. And then of course, hearing from a friend is just good fun, as opposed to dreading having them come over to my messy house...
Which corner would I have to clean to get the carpenters reply to my many answerphone messager, that's what I want to know!?

Well, it's probably not a nice thing to poke fun at Feng Shui without not really knowing anything about it.
I wonder if there are any lurkers out there who could actually tell us more about it - even if it may sound a bit weird to us.

I worked my way through 6 different carpenters over about 8 months, none of whom ever returned calls or called round to give estimates, even when they'd promised they would . I don't know about cleaning but the magic seemed to work when I stopped caring about carpenters and stopped manicly ringing them ..... behold a couple of weeks later a card appeared in my letterbox from a local carpenter (who both phoned back and is coming next week to hang my doors)

I believe it more than I feel I should, oddly enough... Not that I actually have had any huge positive things happen after just cleaning out something, though... But I do feel good, and I try to put furniture sensibly, even if I don't follow the bagua that well. So I suppose I wanted to make fun of myself than at Feng Shui, really.
Maybe the Zen of carpentry actually is a better approach! I'll try it!

from what i understand of feng shui its all to do with the natural energy flow n how we can harness or obstruct it.

It usually works in reverse for me: a friend, relative - or, in yesterday's case, my landady - phones to say they are visiting.
With the result that I then furiously tidy, clean and hoover - or, in yesterday's case, spend 6 solid hours scrubbing bathroom floors

Did a massive flat-cleaning before blicky came to stay last month - I think it's very helpful to have a houseguest from time to time, motivation-wise.
Meanwhile, I keep a very 'minamilist' thing going - less cr*p to dust.

Well, I'm going to clear out of the way, all the boxes that are lined up behind my front door as I think this is blocking the energy that should be bringing me some employment. At the momemnt I am just getting a couple of hours here and there in a bistro, i.e. time dished out in little parcels... ?

Feng Shui was originally used to aid in the siting of cemetaries and graves, so that the ghosts would be happy and not come back to haunt their families.
Then it was used in the siting of homes and then the siting of furniture. Some of it is basic psychology, round corners are better for energy flow and also cause less bruises. Having your bed face a door or a seat with its back to a door, can make you feel uneasy.
Originally all directions were worked out with a compass, but when westerners took it over, they found compasses difficult and so devised new methods based on the siting of your front door.
There is a lot to it, I have respect for the Chinese system. I do not believe what it has become though. I studied it for a year when I had a New Age/Pagan shop. I had to study many things I didn't believe in, just to answer customers questions. To be a genuine practitioner though takes many many years work, often 10 to 20 years before you can work on your own and be respected. In this country you can get a meaningless certificate after a weeks course.
