Ok... I think I got it in 12 squares...

Cut the cake into quarters. Then cut one of the quarters 3x3. Tada!

You can also cut a large square in 21 squares, all of which being different. Here's a solution:

No matter how one cut the cake, surely one would end up with cuboids rather than squares?smiley - winkeye

Should we assume this year's calendar is much more logical given the lack of posts?

Yep. Other than the order of operations problem, it's been good. Most of the puzzles aren't easily repeatable here though. Some are like crosswords, some are spot the difference type things.

But if I run into a smiley - doh one I'll share it here.

Speaking of which...

If every step is supposed to affect the result of the previous one (that is to say, if you are allowed reverse polish notation smiley - winkeye), I found a way:

((6-5)+1)*3 = 6

That's the 'correct' answer, just with added parenthesis.

- + X

Heh... This calendar is not perfect.

Yesterday's puzzle was an arrangement of 10 dominoes. 4 were placed and it was up to the reader to place the remaining 6. There are sums along the right and bottom edges of the arrangement to be matched to the numbers along the rows and columns.

I got all but the last domino in with no problems but with no way to get that one in. I never got around to trying again yesterday so I just went to the answer.

AH! No wonder. Somehow the [2|6] turned into a [4|4] on the back of the page. smiley - laugh

The Sunday crossword in my local paper featured a Douglas Adams quote. It took me quite awhile to (nearly) finish it, but I wasn't giving up (at least until I finished out the quote at least).

"I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer."

I did have a few empty squares left over, but I just lacked knowledge of the clues' subjects. A couple were biblical. smiley - winkeye
