Horses and Distance

I know this is a really random question, but I was trying to find this out for a report and never could find the answer! Does anyone know how far a horse can travel in one day?

Dzhenggis Khan's elite cavalry could travel 125 miles in a day. Though in the wild I would of thought that horses wouldn't travel even half of that smiley - smiley Hope that helps.....

At the risk of confusing the issue, how long is a day? Are we talking 24 hours, 12 hours, an 8 hour working day, or however long day-light lasts (which is variable)?

Well, the question was if one person who had to get a message from London to some port in the western part of England( i think it was about 200 miles, but it was a while ago so I'm not positive) really really fast, could they do it in a day? I'm guessing that means 24 hours because I think one could travel nonstop if necessary. This was during the Revolutionary War, so I figured horses were the fastest way to travel. Anyway, I spent almost two hours online unsuccessfully looking for an answer, so I just wanted to find out if there was a good way to find stuff out if I even need to in the future.

I know that there is a legend that some highwayman, usually Dick Turpin or 'Swift Nick', rode from London to York in one night using just one horse. As the distance from London to York is at about 300 miles this is generally held to be impossible as no horse can keep going that fast for that long. If somebody wanted to get from London to Bristol (that's the only West Coast port I know) and they were on official business, there would be points at which they could change horses. So travelling a long distance quickly by horse would be feasible.

I seem to remember for some reason the person only could have one horse (they were a convict or a spy or something), but it doesn't really matter anyway, I was really just trying to figure out how quickly I could get a correct reply using h2g2. Thank you very much, though! smiley - smiley
