Sex vs making love

This was briefly touched on in the my penis and I thread and I thought perhaps it warrented its own thread. So ,do you think theres a discernable difference between the two or are they just terms?is it important to differeniate and how do you do personally etc?

To me sex is purely physical and self pleasure oriented..whilst making love is more about expressing love through touch n a lot more about the emotional connection than physical gratification.

Sex is just one of many components to love making. You can make love without sex, but sex enhances the experience, especially if it is your partners gratification that is uppermost in your mind.

However, sex can be used away from love making in which case it probably is little more than personal gratification.

I hate the term 'making love'. I think it's daft and old fashioned. I prefer just sex, and that's what I teach my son.

I do have to say that this is backed up by my own experiences - I didn't love either of the two blokes who've given me the best sexual experiences of my life, although I did like and fancy both of them a lot.

I still like the phrase 'having it off' though. I think that's hilarious.

Sex is a bit like food; sometimes you're in the mood for the full banquet with several leisurely courses - and sometimes you just want a pot noodle.

And sometimes you'd rather just have a nice smiley - tea and some smiley - choc

What could possibly be sexier than hearing the words "psst! fancy a f**k?"

I have sex, and my girlfriend has sex with me. And we love each other.

Erm unlike Mina for me making love has a very different meaning from sex.
I don't consider the term old fashioned because its meaning now is very different to its meaning 80 years ago or even 180 years ago. It has evolved like so much of the English language.

When I am not in a relationship I tend to have sex for personal gratification and I am ashamed to say I didn't really worry about the other person. Now I am in a relationship it is very much about making love - ie it is an expression of how I feel about the other person and not just scratching an itch.

I have never understood the expression "making love". People either are there, and enjoying the depths and wonders of it, or they aren't. The physical acts are so very pleasureable, but do NOT constitute the "making" of anything except perhaps more persons.

Just my coupla' pennies worth ....

Yeah but it is a phrase that dates back centuries and like many phrases don't really stand up to post modern deconstruction. It's like "drawing a blank" - which comes from hunting terminology. It doesn't stop us using a phrase that actually when you pull it apart doesn't make sense. There are no pencils involved and what is a blank anyway?

But I like old words and phrases so I am biased.

In my mind there is a distinction, I only make love when I'm in a relationship, I can have sex when I'm not. It probably sounds daft and a little naive but I do think the emotional connection makes a difference. I've had sex with several people, I've only made love to one person so far

I also think that sex between people who love each other is not *always* about the love aspect and can be more about physical satisfaction. When one is more in the mood for a quick snack than a full-course meal . . .

Quite agree. "Do you want to make love?" just sounds kinda ick to me.

Surely 'making love' is nothing more than a euphemism.

Although, having said that, I am a bit of a fan of the Victoria Wood-esque 'doing it' smiley - winkeye

DA ; Simply Vicky: Don't get pithy with me!

Oh, most definitely there is a difference... Sex on its own, is purely self gratification, and as Donald says, there are ways of making love that don't (necessarily) involve sex...

Well, that's one opinion - it's not mine.

Masturbation is purely self gratification - sex is something two (if not more) people do. Making love is something that only happens in movies, and the sheets never get in the way, there's never a damp patch and your nipple clamps never fall off
