Ah, you mean this:
[Taking the gifts from the Three Wise Men and pushing them out the door]
Brian's Mother: Er, well, um, if you're dropping by again, do pop in. Heh. And thanks a lot for the gold and frankincense, er, but don't worry too much about the myrrh next time. All right? Heh. Thank you. Good-bye.
[Three wise men leave]
Brian's Mother: Well, weren't they nice? Hmm. Out of their bloody minds, but still.
That's it...
And let's not forget what LoB has to say on the subject of grammar:
[Brian is writing graffiti on the palace wall. The Centurion catches him in the act]
Centurion: What's this, then? "Romanes eunt domus"? People called Romanes, they go, the house?
Brian: It says, "Romans go home. "
Centurion: No it doesn't ! What's the latin for "Roman"? Come on, come on !
Brian: Er, "Romanus" !
Centurion: Vocative plural of "Romanus" is?
Brian: Er, er, "Romani" !
Centurion: [Writes "Romani" over Brian's graffiti] "Eunt"? What is "eunt"? Conjugate the verb, "to go" !
Brian: Er, "Ire". Er, "eo", "is", "it", "imus", "itis", "eunt".
Centurion: So, "eunt" is...?
Brian: Third person plural present indicative, "they go".
Centurion: But, "Romans, go home" is an order. So you must use...?
[He twists Brian's ear]
Brian: Aaagh ! The imperative !
Centurion: Which is...?
Brian: Aaaagh ! Er, er, "i" !
Centurion: How many Romans?
Brian: Aaaaagh ! Plural, plural, er, "ite" !
Centurion: [Writes "ite"] "Domus"? Nominative? "Go home" is motion towards, isn't it?
Brian: Dative !
[the Centurion holds a sword to his throat]
Brian: Aaagh ! Not the dative, not the dative ! Er, er, accusative, "Domum" !
Centurion: But "Domus" takes the locative, which is...?
Brian: Er, "Domum" !
Centurion: [Writes "Domum"] Understand? Now, write it out a hundred times.
Brian: Yes sir. Thank you, sir. Hail Caesar, sir.
Centurion: Hail Caesar ! And if it's not done by sunrise, I'll cut your s off.

What a brilliant quote!
Can anyone tell me what extra features the Life of Brian DVD has on it as the Australian issue has bugger all.

My choice is a totally silly movie we saw in February - 'Fatal Instinct', with Armand wossname, it was a take-off on Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction, combined! Overall, it was good-natured but just very funny, verbally, not slapstick! (Which stinks on ice, IMO.)

Oh, and another one, Ice Age. A sleeper, but side-splittingly funny. (Though it does get a bit Hollywood mawkish at the end.)

I love 'Brian' but wouldn't say it was the funniest movie...ditto 'Blazing saddles' ("Candygram for Mongo! Candygram for Mongo!")
I'd like to nominate 'Galaxy Quest' as very funny (Alan Rickman does it for me very time!) - but not the funniest, also 'Something About Mary'
And 'Shrek' has to be up near the top somewhere...but the funniest ever?? hmmmmmm

Blues Shark - For people who like this sort of thing, then this is just the sort of thing they'll like Posted Mar 16, 2005
I have to say that most of the films mentioned in this thread bring me out in terminal depression.
Though I would champuion pdante's choice of the wonderful M. Hulot's Holiday, as well as Mon Oncle. (At the age of 18 i was lucky enough to catch a double bill of Mon Oncle and playtime. I nearly had a hernia.)
Going back even further in time, Luarel and hardy made two of the finest comedies in the history of film, Way Out West and Sons of the Desert.
But i trhink for funniest movie ever made, I'm going to plump for one of the finest movies ever made, the wonderful Arsenic and Old Lace. Featuring some of the finest performances in the history of cinema - Gary Grant, Raymond 'Don't call me Boris Karloff' Massey and Peter Lorre it is a thing of beauty and a joy forever.

Well if I am talking about fave funny films I think that "The Big Lebowski" has to be mentioned. Pure class. All he wanted was his rug...

I also thought that "American Pyscho" was pretty funny.
Perhaps I missed the point but I thought it was more a pastiche on the 80s than a horror film.

I've been feeling the same. But then the funniest movie I could think of today was Trainspotting.
The LoB quote above is great - that too makes me want to watch it again.

I was considering mentioning Laurel and Hardy I must say, you could even include more than the two mentioned above as in their time they were exclusively a cinema medium (at least I think so).
Is it 'The Music Box' where they have to shift a piano up a hill?
Very difficult to beat that.

I personally never took to Laurel and Hardy... For the B&W comedy teams I preferred Abbott and Costello... But the Three Stooges still make me laugh.
For the Silents I think Chaplin doesn't hold up today, but Buster Keaton and, my favourite, Harold Lloyd still make me laugh.
Back to Funniest of all time....
Let's not forget A Fish Called Wanda... That should rank fairly high on my list. "K-k-k-k-ken's going to k-k-k-k-kill me!"
And Time Bandits as well... "God isn't interested in technology. He cares nothing for the microchip or the silicon revolution. Look how he spends his time, forty-three species of parrots! Nipples for men!"
I can't decide which Mel Brooks movie is funnier, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein or History of the World Part I.
He definitely lost it after To Be or Not To Be though... Life Sucks? Sucked.

Orcus Posted Mar 16, 2005
I've always found A Fish Called Wanda highly overrated. It may be Cleese's most commercially successful film but I personally think he's done far funnier stuff.
The title film for example
PS. You actually found Mel Brooks' History of the World film funny
Like I said, very subjective

Baron Grim Posted Mar 16, 2005
Humour is about the most subjective thing I can think of...
As I think of it even some of my choices are suprising me...
I consider myself fairly intelligent and intellectual... yet for gut busting laughter silliness beats high brow humour.
Oh, don't get me wrong... My favourite funny films are things like Brazil, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, After Hours, Life is Beautiful, Amelie, Dr. Strangelove among many others... yet are they funnier than something like "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World?" or the first "Vacation" movie? ... The most laughs I've had at the theatre in recent years was when I saw "Bad Santa" with some friends. I hadn't laughed that much since "South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut".
Do I think those are better than Brazil?.... no... but I laughed a lot more.
Keep in mind... some people still like Jerry Lewis.
(Why is it that when Jerry Lewis tries to be funny he bores me stiff, but when he tries to be serious I can't keep a straight face.)
