I only use MS IE browser at work cos that's what is on the machine (like many people, I guess).
Now that even MS IE implements multi-tabbed browsing isn;t it about time there was some way to stop it launching new browser windows when you click a link that tells it to launch a new window?
Just seems rather useless to implement tabs and then every time you click on a new browser link it doesn;t use the tabbed functionality.
I know Opera doesn;t seem to have this problem, it just launches a new browser window.
Or is there an IE 7 option I am missing out on that would set this for me?

Well you can right-click and tell it to open in new tab rather than a new window.

well, yes, but that isn't intuitive and quick enough - 2 clicks and a move vs. 1 click - not good enough
Plus I keep forgetting and it is annoying ending up with multiple pages and you can;t remember what is where.

If you have a wheeled mouse you could set up a preference so that wheel-clicking opens a link in a new tab, I think.

Middle-clicking opening a link in a new tab seems fairly standard. If that doesn't work, ctrl-clicking will. Other handy things:
Ctrl + tab (indent) = cycle through tabs.
Ctrl + shift + tab = cycle in reverse
Ctrl + t = new tab on homepage

TRiG (Ireland) A dog, so bade in office Posted Nov 18, 2008
There is an option somewhere to open new windows in a new tab. I found it a while ago. But I no longer have IE, so I can't tell you where it is. (Other people in the office have reverted to IE6, having had problems with IE7, so I can't even ask them.)

BBtM - middle mouse on mine just does the useless scrolly icon mouse mode thingy (technical term). I guess I could remap as ctrl-click but I want it to work how *I* want it to work I know, I know, doomed to a life of disappointment.
TRiG - Thanks for the false hope! I shall now have to go trawling through the sub menus to find it. If I don;t I shall be back with a basket load of 's and
's to fling in your general direction

well done TRiG - buffet contents will not become airborne
Tools -> Internet Options -> 'general' tab section 'Tabs' button 'Settings' has the option 'When a pop-up is encountered'
Mine was set to 'always open in new window' so changed to 'always open in new tab' and hey presto it no longer does it
